Historia
Reporter Sam Kean reveals the periodic table as it’s never been seen before. Not only is it one of man's crowning scientific achievements, it's also a treasure trove of stories of passion, adventure, betrayal, and obsession. The infectious tales and astounding details in The Disappearing Spoon follow carbon, neon, silicon, and gold as they play out their parts in human history, finance, mythology, war, the arts, poison, and the lives of the (frequently) mad scientists who discovered them.

Good read
Revisado: 03-04-25
I bought this years ago in paperback and couldn't get very far in it because it was somewhat disjointed and boring... and I'm a high school chemistry teacher who likes science history. However, recently I borrowed the audio version and started over. I enjoyed about 75% of the book and the rest was boring (mainly part 1 and part IV.)
The history of the elements was quick and for the most part easy to read. The notes and errata were for the most part of anecdotal interest. There are some stories I will share with my students.

Loved it!
Revisado: 03-04-25
I borrowed the audio book from Audible Plus, finished it in 3 days at higher speed, and enjoyed it so much I bought a hardbound book of it. The writer gives an interesting and concise history of geology which is fun to read. In fact, it explained so many missing gaps in my education as a high school science teacher that I was excited. The science overlapped into many other disciplines and explained the puzzles that scientists had to overcome to come up with a theory.
I enjoyed the book and the author so much I bought two more of his books and I would highly recommend him.

Not his best
Revisado: 02-04-25
3.5 stars. I don't remember reading this book decades ago when I was reading Francis. I truly love this author's books but this one had little about horses and was way too in depth on distilling and the people around him that I almost gave it 3 stars but out of loyalty to the author I just couldn't. The mystery was good and the hero was good and the ending was great but the in between wasn't too captivating with the introspective thoughts from the hero and not as much action as normal when reading Francis books. I listened to the audio book and I really liked the narrator, I've listened to him reading a Francis book before.
I liked the narrator.

Not her best
Revisado: 02-04-25
I read the audio book decades after reading the paperback. The book has many different stories intertwined within it with a story about growing up and 3 romances. It was difficult to get into it and the characters of the people were not nice. The chaos and drama between all the people is not attractive to me. The sarcasm and running away of the romance partners is off putting and just immature and mean toward the nine year old child. This is one of my least favorite books by this author.
There were some funny and some sweet parts but the book just was too long and the relationships were too complicated for me to want to read it except for every few decades.
The narrator was good.

I like this author. I had bought the ebook trilogy but it took the audiobook for me to finish it. I enjoyed the heroine gaining confidence and using her magical powers. The mystery of what was going on kept me reading.

Too much drama
Revisado: 01-20-25
The drama and lack of communication was frustrating in the families. The heroine was so emotional and illogical in how she treated the hero and the daughters blamed their mother and competed with each other. The secrets of both families were hidden in so many areas and every time the heroine chose not to trust the hero. Additionally, the hero’s sister was just as emotional and illogical. The niece was a ten year old that was headstrong and acted like a 15 year old. So much of the drama was needless and prolonged the story.
And the men were just faithful lap dogs who rarely confronted the nasty women. And the sex and the “soulmates” were constantly breaking up because of the unreasonable heroine. Plus, both the H/h would go from hot to cold either out of guilt about the past secrets or anger from the heroine.
