Fascinating story, excellent reporting and delivery

I saw this story originally on Dateline, and had to get more content. This podcast is excellent, a real deep dive with personal interviews with the subject. Must listen!

Historia
At a remote little inn not far from the Kansas homestead of Laura Ingalls Wilder lived the Bender family. These pioneers welcomed unwary visitors with jackrabbit stew and a sledgehammer to the skull. In time, their apple orchard gave up its secrets - a burial ground for their mutilated victims, each stripped of their possessions. The devilish enterprise on “Hell’s Half-Acre” would earn the Bloody Benders an undying place in the annals of American infamy. But it was the mysterious fate of eldest daughter, Kate, that would make them the stuff of mythic campfire prairie tales.

Crazy story of a wicked family
Revisado: 01-10-23
This is a very interesting story, made better by Weber’s sultry voice. I could listen to him read the phone book. But luckily, it’s also a well-researched and written book.

None of the charm of Almost Interesting
Revisado: 09-16-22
I have read/listened to David Spade’s first book many times, and recommended it to so many friends! Well, the charm and honesty of that book is all but wiped out in the first two chapters of this book. I’m returning it as soon as I finish this review. With all the talk of “scoring” and “game” with “chicks” and even a “bitch” thrown in, it seems to be aimed at a specific demographic (DUDES) that is not me: a huge comedy nerd that has been a fan of David’s since he first set foot on the SNL stage. I’ve followed his career and enjoyed seeing his star rise. Heck, I still have episodes of Lights Out on my DVR. His mix of semi-brutal humor and charming self deprecation is what makes him so likable. But this? I was turned off from 5 minutes in, but gave it another 1/2 hour or so to make sure it didn’t get better. He is a great story teller, but these stories are just icky. He sounds like a bitter old man. I’m sure the bros will love it, but I am out. I get that it’s self-preservation on his part, but it’s a bummer. (Enter requisite “buh-bye” here.)

Historia
After their parents divorced in the 1970s, Andre Dubus III and his three siblings grew up with their exhausted working mother in a depressed Massachusetts mill town saturated with drugs and crime. To protect himself and those he loved from street violence, Andre learned to use his fists so well that he was even scared of himself. He was on a fast track to getting killed—or killing someone else—or to beatings-for-pay as a boxer.

Raw, real, and transformative
Revisado: 04-06-16
Truly the best audio book I've listened to to date. Being narrated by the author makes a huge difference in believing and "living through" a person's real-life story, and Andre Dubus III made me feel like I was there for all the brutal, but somehow always reflective and hopeful, events of his life. And his subtle, old school Boston accent sounds like home to me. Thank you for sharing your story, and that of your family, Mr. Dubus.
