Holly Randall makes the absolute most of every guest. She is a niche Terry Gross, but, in some ways, better than Terry Gross. She knows about her guests' backgrounds, and is clearly and deeply knowledgeable about their shared industry. She drew out some great thoughts and conversation here! I like that she does a good mix of listening and contributing to the conversation herself - let the guest shine and relate to them!

Wynne-Jones' writing is always a treasure, and this is no exception. I can see why Miyazaki wanted to adapt it. So many moments of the story don't seem like epic, bombastic fantasy, but more personal, though tinged with seriously fantastic elements that come together beautifully by the end, but draw the reader/listener in closely. The voice performance was excellent as well, choices fitting each character and kept me engaged.

This book follows a very interesting, sympathetic woman on a journey many of us have had: a kinda messed up childhood, finding solace in substances, a productive adult life, but one that becomes more challenging. Through it all, until one needs to be through, is alcohol. The narrator is unflinchingly honest throughout (as far as I can tell - I don't know her personally). She provides some good insights on drinking and the need to give it up. She gives the reader space to relate and space to step away or back, which I appreciate. The story and her reading are entertaining and engaging.

Chas Smith is a jerk, but he writes well

Chas Smith is quite a personality, borrowing heavily from the corpse of Hunter S Thompson, a bizarre, snearing primadonna. He derides surfers and the surf industry for their ignorance of his fashion standards, for hypocrisy, and it is no wonder that he's met with his subjects' unkind words and occasionally their violence. He's a jerk. But he does write well. He's not always wrong. His hyperbole is sometimes bullshit, but it is entertaining. His profiles of Eddie Rothman and Kai Garcia are interesting and actually pretty friendly. I wish never to meet Chas Smith, but I will happily read what he writes.

This is definitely one of the longest books I've ever read. The epic of Arthur is indeed epic, as much as it is more the epic of Morgaine. There are many lessons about religious tolerance and bigotry here, amd dialogue and desires to spare. Mists of Avalon has indeed become a classic of the genre and deserves a spot on one of the great Arthurian works. This is why I cringe to say it could have been shorter. But Porter's performance is truly epic. Her voice acting and characterizations are beautiful. I kept coming back, in part, to hear her voice. I do recommend the book. And to be promiscuous in your reading and listening.

I love this series of books and this doesn't disappoint. This is probably the most out therein the series so far, but very cool. The Wilderness and Road are some crazy zones! The narrator is close to the voice of the previous books, but not quite.

This book is a good bit of help. It's not a "praise AA" thing, but does focus on a lot of connection amd accountability. Churchill has really done his research, both personally and scholarly. This book offers a lot of perspective on the history of addiction and the current understanding of addiction's causes & better treatments. His perspective that not drinking alcohol can bring way more to life than it subtracts is especially helpful. His voice is friendly and easy to listen to. Check out the Recovery Elevator podcast if you end up liking this book.

Sandman is one of the best series of the 20th century. It's adaptation into a full audio drama is excellent. I couldn't ask for more in this medium. The casting is brilliant! It collects 2 of the best chapters from the series, A Season of Mists, in which Lucifer retires and gives Dream the keys to Hell, which only he seems to not want and A Game of You, in which we see what happens to the internal dream worlds we create and what must eventually happen to them when no one is left to care for them. The only thing that struck me as off was the credits. Why call out each cast member for each chapter of the book? Overall, it is wonderful and I absolutely can't wait until they get to Brief Lives!

This is a great podcast for folks who think about sex & want to broaden their thinking and impressions about sex work, sex workers, and sexuality. The hosts have a great set of questions for each guest and have chosen their guests well. This is so much more than, "So, what was having sex on camerlike for you?" There are deep discussions about the lives of sex workers in their actual work, how their work informs their life and vice versa. Deeply entertaining!
