After listening to the series twice now, the Black Fleet saga goes down as one of my favorite of all time. It’s so difficult to keep an amazing character like Jackson Wolfe going for 9 books, but Dalzelle does a great job of keeping him at the story’s core. I’m just sad to see it end, leaving me feeling anticlimactic. Looking back the whole story feels like it’s told in reverse.

I was really hoping this book would be the conclusion to the Granger/Proctor story line. Some interesting new plot points are presented but mostly just a spiraling, confusing mess. This saga has branched so far from its roots that it’s lost most of its momentum for me. Greg Tremblay does a fantastic job as always with the audible version.

If you’re still invested in this saga, I’d say just get through this book and hopefully things are concluded in book 9.

Over the past few books I’ve started to get the impression that Nick Webb is just crafting these stories to explore crazy physics theories. There is still character growth, but the insane feats of science feel more like magic now. I hope Nick can bring the story back to the core character development that got me hook in the original trilogy.
