Historia
In a sleepy Devon village, a woman is taken from the streets. Local vet Jenny is horrified. This kind of thing doesn’t happen here. But it’s not the first time she’s been so close to a crime scene. The daughter of a prolific serial killer, she’s spent her whole life running from who she really is. And the crime is harrowingly similar to those her father committed all those years ago.

Not a sequel!
Revisado: 12-16-23
I was so confused. I assumed this was a follow up to The Serial Killer's Wife (which I really enjoyed!), and expected the main character to be Poppy.
Even once I figured out that it was totally unrelated, it just didn't hold my attention. I made it 6 chapters and it feels like nothing is really happening. The story just drags for me. Shame!

Historia
In 2011, a 26-year-old libertarian programmer named Ross Ulbricht launched the ultimate free market: the Silk Road, a clandestine website hosted on the Dark Web where anyone could trade anything - drugs, hacking software, forged passports, counterfeit cash, poisons - free of the government's watchful eye. It wasn't long before the media got wind of the new website where anyone - not just teenagers and weed dealers but terrorists and black hat hackers - could buy and sell contraband detection-free.

Amazing True Story; Decent Storytelling
Revisado: 04-13-18
Where does American Kingpin rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?
I wasn't blown away by the narration, but it was adequate. It didn't really distract from the story. The story is incredible...as only real life can be!
What other book might you compare American Kingpin to and why?
Not sure what book, but fans of Narco, Breaking Bad, etc will dig this. There are also some references to the 9/11 era and the possible implications of having weapons and bomb making elements readily available for purchase, so people interested in that topic may find this tangentially related story of interest, as well.
Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
No, not really. There were a few sections that dragged on a bit for me, but I don't view that as a flaw of the writing. It was a very long road to build that online empire, as well as attempting to tear it down, and I think the book conveyed that.
Any additional comments?
I like a true story, and I appreciated (as I learned in the prologue) that the author included verbatim conversations and text chats held by the characters in real life. I also appreciated the way he wove all the many different perspectives and story lines in to a cohesive whole.
