Unique narration, but recommend.
Revisado: 02-06-24
The Russian accent threw me off at first since most Russian literature audiobooks don't try to sound Russian. However, the narration was pretty good.
The story itself is one of Tolstoy's lesser known works, but it's a nice short story.

Who is this book for?
Revisado: 10-11-23
First and foremost, I really appreciate Chris Broad and his channel "Abroad in Japan". Unfortunately, I don't know what the point of this book was.
I read some reviews call this an "Origin" story, but it's not. Anyone who follows his channel would have probably heard 95% of the content in either his channel, or one of the dozen content creators he collaborates with. We already know the origin story.
Sure, it recaps his entire time in Japan nicely into a book, and it's entertaining at times, but I didn't really reveal anything that he hadn't talked about before. With some exceptions, of course.
So, who exactly is this book for? I'm sure that someone who has never heard of Chris nor his YouTube channel may enjoy this book, but it's nothing new or exciting. I loved the narration, and I think anyone who follows his channel would love to hear Chris talk for 8+ hours, but it's not a book I'd normally purchase if I didn't know who he was.

The Overcoat is literally about an overcoat..
Revisado: 06-10-20
The Overcoat is literally a short story about an overcoat, but he also illustrate the importance of such a simple piece of clothing through the life and death of Akaky Akakievich.
The Overcoat had numerous Film Adaptations, Radio Programs, Plays and even BALLETS. The Overcoat, a short story about an overcoat, was made into a ballet.. Nikolai Gogol brilliance was in his simplicity.
Also, Kate Shrewsday is such a pleasant narrator. I would recommend this book.

Historia
Exiled to four years in Siberia, but hailed by the end of his life as a saint, prophet, and genius, Fyodor Dostoevsky holds an exalted place among the best of the great Russian authors. One of Dostoevsky’s five major novels, Devils follows the travails of a small provincial town beset by a band of modish radicals - and in so doing presents a devastating depiction of life and politics in late 19th-century Imperial Russia.

Intermittent GREATNESS and prolonged boredom..
Revisado: 06-10-20
Fyodor Dostoevsky is one of the great authors in Russian Literature, and Devils (sometimes also called The Possessed or Demons) certainly lived up to the brilliant complexity which we love in classic literature..
George Guidall is widely recognized as the world's most acclaimed and prolific audiobook narrator. His rendition of Devils is probably the best you'll find on Audible (or anywhere for that matter).
Unfortunately, I would not recommend this particular audiobook. Devils is dotted with some of the GREATEST writing in Russian literature. However, that greatness is followed by the most prolonged pointless dialog ever written in Russian literature.. Devils "brilliant complexity which we love in classic literature" becomes it's own curse. I simply could not follow along.
I probably would have loved this book if I was a reader in the mid to late 1800's when Devils was first published. I would even love this book TODAY if I took the time to physically read it. Unfortunately, it doesn't work as an audiobook. Period.

Resurrection is a novel about Tolstoy's ideology.
Revisado: 06-04-20
Leo Tolstoy was a dedicated advocate of Georgism and Christian anarchistism, and he brilliantly incorporated these ideologies within Resurrection. The story itself revolves around a nobleman and a prostitute named Maslova, with the former seeking redemption for a sin committed years earlier.
Although intended as an "exposition of the injustice of man-made laws and the hypocrisy of the institutionalized church", Resurrection depicts one of the most beautiful and humbling journeys for a protagonist in Russian Literature.
In summary, Neville Jason (The narrator) simply delivered a wonderful rendition of a masterpiece which I wholeheartedly enjoyed and recommend!

Historia
One of the world’s greatest novelists, Leo Tolstoy was also the author of a number of superb short stories, one of his best known being “The Kreutzer Sonata.” This macabre story involves the murder of a wife by her husband. It is a penetrating study of jealousy as well as a piercing complaint about the way in which society educates men and women in matters of sex - a serious condemnation of the mores and attitudes of the wealthy, educated class.

An in-depth first-person story of a man's psyche.
Revisado: 05-22-20
Simon Prebble (The Narrator) has delivered some great narrations over the years including some other works by Leo Tolstoy and Fyodor Dostoyevsky, and The Kreutzer Sonata definitely lives up to his standards!
The Kreutzer Sonata is a slower paced novel compared to some of Leo Tolstoy other works. However, this is an interesting insight on a man's psyche as the protagonist recounts his entire life up to the moment he murders his wife in a jealous rage.
Should you listen to the book? Yes, but just be aware of what type of book this is before you purchase. The novella was published in 1889, and was promptly censored by the Russian authorities, and even Theodore Roosevelt called Tolstoy a "sexual moral pervert" because of this novel.

Nikolai Gogol's The Inspector General, known also as The Government Inspector, was first published in 1836. It was based on an anecdote first recounted to Gogol by Pushkin. Laurence Olivier plays the irresponsible gambler Ivan Alexandrovic Khlestakov in this satire on the greed, corruption and stupidity of Imperial Russia.

I was initially unsure how I would like a Radio Program's version of "The inspector General", but ended up really enjoying the entire 18 minutes. The story (although short) keeps us amused by satirizing human greed, stupidity, and the extensive political corruption of Imperial Russia.
I gave it a 5 Star on both Performance and Story. It's simply great for what it is.

Historia
Nikolai Gogol (1809-1852) was a pre-eminent Ukrainian-born story writer. He is particularly famous for those stories which veer in the direction of surrealism and the grotesque. "The Nose" is a classic example of this genre. The story opens with the barber, Ivan Yakovlevitch at breakfast. Things take an odd turn when Yakovlevitch finds a disembodied nose hidden in his bread roll. Yakovlevitch is at pains to rid himself as quickly as he can of the nose, which he recognizes as belonging to one of his clients, Major Kovalev.

Short stories are what made Nikolai Gogol great.
Revisado: 05-12-20
The pure absurdity and simplicity of "The Nose" really made mere 1 hr and 7 mins memorable. Gogol's satire and unconventional comedy is what brought him into the literary-limelight, and "The Nose" did not disappoint.
I read a one of the previous reviews which complained that "The Nose" did not use enough big words.. ARE YOU SERIOUS!?!?!? Nikolai Gogol brilliance is in his simplicity.

This was FAR better than what I was expecting!
Revisado: 05-12-20
With the exception of the first chapter, this book is a memoir of a protagonist life in a Siberian prison camp. However, written by Fyodor Dostoyevsky and narrated by Nicholas Boulton (My absolute favorite Narrator of Russian Literature), this "memoir" comes to life to perfectly portray the life of convicts during those times.
There is nothing extraordinary about this novel and even perhaps the most uneventful book written by Dostoyevsky, but I still found myself enjoying each moment of the 12 hours.
