Too much mental dithering

I have liked Josie Prescott mysteries in the past but this one rubbed me the wrong way from the get go! Mispronounced words added to my frustration with Prescott's endless mental ditherings about everything. Just when I had convinced myself to listen to more and accept it as a sort of boring book to go to sleep with, a word would get mangled and I would be alert and annoyed.

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

Mrs. Bradley is a fine read if you like British classic mysteries and enjoy a mix of Agatha Christie and P.G. Wodehouse, with a dash of accountant's spreadsheet of facts and clues.

Who was your favorite character and why?

Personally, I find a heroine with "beady eyes" and "yellow talons" enchanting. Not suffering fools is another trait I like in Mrs. Bradley. I _felt_ the book is playing by the rules and, if I was attentive and as intuitive as Mrs. B, I should have figured it out. Was it playing by the rules? I haven't a clue, nor do I care...it is a detailed romp that was fun.

Any additional comments?

It is a silly but serious handling of a story. I _felt_ the book is playing by the rules and, if I was attentive and as intuitive as Mrs. B, I should have figured it out. Was it playing by the rules? I haven't a clue, nor do I care...it is a detailed detective romp that was fun.

What could have made this a 4 or 5-star listening experience for you?

I would need another reader of the book...

What didn’t you like about Samuel Gillies’s performance?

While Samuel Gilles has a good voice, he has not yet mastered handling different voices. Needing to constantly consider who is speaking was distracting and annoying. I felt his attempts at accents from different classes or regions were not convincing either. But he has a really cool voice if coaching can improve his weaknesses.

You didn’t love this book... but did it have any redeeming qualities?

I was looking forward to plowing through this series...I like the main character and his mental quirks.

The Graft Didn't Take

I like reading lit from Austen's period, and I like science fiction. I thought this would be perfect! However, the author didn't take either genre seriously, and this sort of seemingly dashed off romp is too poorly executed to make it work. I can see how someone could enjoy it if they don't want subtlety and complexity...sort of like old style comic books.
Stick to reading Austen and Neal Stephenson alternately if you enjoy being immersed in another time and alternate realities.
