Overall a Decent Book
Revisado: 01-22-25
The cover art is what pulled me into this book. I've also heard good reviews on David Sodergren's novels, so figured I'd give it a shot.
I felt the plotline and overall story was a bit clunky at times. I think it started off strong with building up the character of Muriel McAuley, she was an endearing old lady who I grew to like. But as the story progressed, a distance grew. I wasn't a big fan of the ending of the book. I guess it made sense with the rhythm of everything, but it was weird.
Also I felt there was unnecessary smut scenes in the book. I felt they were added for the shock value rather than building any sort of plot points.
Not sure I would recommend this particular book, not due to the gruesome nature of it, but because of the overall story.

Historia
In Geisha, a Life, Mineko Iwasaki tells her story, from her warm early childhood, to her intense yet privileged upbringing in the Iwasaki okiya (household), to her years as a renowned geisha, and finally, to her decision at the age of 29 to retire and marry, a move that would mirror the demise of geisha culture. Mineko brings to life the beauty and wonder of Gion Kobu, a place that "existed in a world apart, a special realm whose mission and identity depended on preserving the time-honored traditions of the past."

Very informative and easy listening
Revisado: 11-27-24
I really enjoyed this book, as a fan of Arthur Golden's Memoirs of a Geisha, I really wanted to dive into this book to learn more about the geisha that inspired his novel.
The narration of it was done really well, I enjoyed the reading.
The story was emotional and gripping, kept me interested and wanted to finish it in one entire sitting.
Would highly suggest this book if it fits into your general genre of listening.

Historia
This mesmerizing novel tells the story of a brutal murder in the staid Tokyo suburbs, as a young mother who works the night shift making boxed lunches strangles her abusive husband and then seeks the help of her coworkers to dispose of the body and cover up her crime. The coolly intelligent Masako emerges as the plot's ringleader but quickly discovers that this killing is merely the beginning, as it leads to a terrifying foray into the violent underbelly of Japanese society.

Great book overall
Revisado: 11-27-24
This book was very pleasant to listen to, had lots of twists and turns to keep me interested in continuing it. The narration was done very well, I enjoyed the reading style. The plot of the book was great, the ending was a bit odd I will admit, but it did lend to the story itself. Would highly recommend this audiobook.
As an extra, I also watched the movie adaptation and it was not very good.
Other physical books by this author are also very interesting to read.

Didn't care for it, maybe just not my style
Revisado: 11-27-24
I really disliked this book. I did finish it for the sake of finishing it, but it was long and dreadful. The narration of it was not for me, the voices used for the characters were annoying a lot of the time, especially the male voices. I had a hard time sitting through it long enough to finish it. The story itself was not great, it left me disappointed since I read great reviews of this book from various sites and was looking forward to it. The coping mechanisms used by the protagonist as a child made sense, but as she aged, it just got repetitive and uninteresting. Couldn't enjoy the characters. I came the the conclusion that this book probably isn't for me, maybe others will enjoy it but it's really weird.

In my opinion, wasn't the worst.
Revisado: 11-27-24
The story was pretty slow to start but was interesting enough to keep my attention long enough to finish it. It was fairly predictable, I feel the narrator did a decent job, it was cartoony or too animated at times, I felt. But overall it was not too bad. Not a bad book to pass the time with.
