This is the first time I’ve listened to a grandmother and granddaughter mystery. I enjoyed it very much. I like the premise and their “occupations”. Plural intended.

Historia
In one of the most compelling combat narratives ever written, Staff Sergeant David Bellavia, an Army infantry platoon leader in Iraq, gives a teeth-rattling, first-hand account of 11 straight days of heavy house-to-house fighting during the climactic second battle of Fallujah. His actions in the firefight, which included killing five insurgents in hand-to-hand combat, earned Bellavia the Bronze Star, the Silver Star, and New York state's highest military honor, the Conspicuous Service Cross.

The best most honest combat bio I’ve read
Revisado: 05-02-22
I cannot recommend this book highly enough. It is brutally honest and as graphic a portrayal of the psychological and physical cost of war you will ever read. It will long out live the memory of the war it is set in.

Historia
George Churchill Kenney (1889-1977) was a United States Army Air Force general during World War II. Kenney's work narrates the remarkable life of Paul Irvin “Pappy” Gunn and his exploits during the Second World War. Gunn was an integral part of the war effort in the Pacific during WWII. Besides being a brilliant pilot, he was a formidable aviation engineer, a mechanical genius who could rebuild anything from an electric razor to an airplane engine or any of the plane’s hundreds of accessories.

Historia
Born in the Philippines to an American father and a Filipina mother, George Cooper is one of the few surviving veteran pilots who saw action over such fearsome targets as Rabaul and Wewak. Not just another flag-waving story of air combat, Jayhawk describes the war as it really was - a conflict with far-reaching tentacles that gripped and tore at not only the combatants, but also their families, friends, and the way they lived their lives.

This is a follow up but separate book to Air Apaches. It is an amazing and thorough look at the 345th from the only living pilot to fight with them from the beginning of the war. A must read that you will enjoy from beginning to end of a true American hero. It also includes amazing background about his life in the Philippines before and leading up to the war.

Historia
As a B-17 Flying Fortress bomber pilot, John Muirhead led missions into northern Italy, Germany, and Bulgaria during World War II. Ultimately, he was shot down and taken prisoner. John Muirhead's re-creation of those years is a breathtaking mingling of ravaging horrors and silent, surreal images; of raw, tumultuous memory and elegantly paced narrative; of lightening humor and measured reflection. Seldom has a listener been made to feel terror so viscerally. Rarely has a listener ascended the skies so thrillingly.

Really bad character writing and motivations
Revisado: 07-07-20
It seems the author, who must be an end of days prepper type, has a hard time writing characters with any close to realistic motivations or personalities. The story idea is not a bad one which is why I got the book, However the characters are all one dimensional and continuously behave in ways that no person would act. It's horribly frustrating as a reader. They all seem to be acting with no real emotional or even intellectual grasp of what is supposed to be going on around them. The main character is not just flawed but seems to be intellectually challenged as he does thing repeatedly which make no sense in the context of his situation, It leaves you as the reader frustrated at not just his stupidity but the very unrealistic nature of his responses. The FBI agent is written horribly. There seems to be no understanding by the author of how such agents actually operate. Not to mention that a an agent with her background would never be allowed in her position or be operating completly alone. It's a weird dystopian world where at the time of greatest need not even the Army National Guard is on duty helping with evacuations etc. The characters seem to only be marginally aware of what's going on around them and how odd it is. There seems to be no ability to connect context and situation. It is days before the "FBI" agent even makes a connection to the kind of people being taken and what's happening to the world. It's just not believable. They are not just flawed characters they simply seem to be following a script disconnected from reality. Like whole sections of the book are written by two people who are not really on the same page with each other.
Unfortunately it seems that the same personalities that are inclined to be "prepper/end of days types" have trouble understanding human nature and behavior. This may be a result of the same kind of personality who engages in those behaviors. This could have been a good book had it been better research and the author had gotten some decent guidance and editorial supervision along the way. It reads, unfortunately, like a book which is self published and never got any solid review/editing along the way. Whole sections of the book are just written with such poor understanding of human motivation and understanding of police procedure that no amount of suspension of disbelief can get you beyond its failings and allow you to simply become emerged in the story.
The whole world in which it takes place is terribly one deminsional. This seems to lead to the characters blundering their way through an equally one dimensional world. It's a bit like listening to the ideas of some one who supports Trump and his equally one dimensional narcissistic world view. It's a shame. Written well this might have been a fun series of books.

Great series meaningful afterwards
Revisado: 07-01-20
I have been truly enjoying this series. Writing such a long series is difficult. Even more so when trying to keep it fresh. You’ve done a great job. I really appreciate your afterwards. I come from the same background and find myself in much the same spot. 150,000 words in and trying to find a good place to end a book and keep different story lines tied together. I guess first books are just that way. There must be something very anal about being in IT security that makes us lock up on the idea of perfection. I would have listened to the entire Colony series just to hear those comments. It was a wonderful surprise. Thanks.
Btw, I miss the Ascension series and hope it’s not abandoned forever.

Excellent story with a rushed ending
Revisado: 07-19-19
I enjoyed 95% of this book greatly but then the author rushed the ending leaving the reader terribly unsatisfied. Perhaps this is intended to be a series. If not I cannot recommend listening as you will be left terribly dissatisfied. It’s a bad ending even if it is a series. Virtually nothing is resolved and there is no redemption for the characters. I expect better from Daniel Suarez.

Very Disappointed
Revisado: 11-14-18
Having liked the first book I was disappointed in the 2nd. The book does little to advance the plot, it seems to constantly spin its wheels on the same topics and some characters, including Tom, show no growth. The science is also terrible. I don’t expect perfect science in a Space Opera but its pretty bad. As an example. There is a planet located in deep space with an atmosphere. No planet would have such as it would have frozen and been locked up in the planets surface. It is also highly unlikely such a planet would have a molten core for that reason and the lack of gravitational tidal forces acting on the planet. This is all basic stuff. Hard Pass.
