Artorian wakes in youthful form version three, and happier he could not be. Exploring Avalon is a treat to the senses, with cat cafes galore and gossip flowing evermore. Lectures on Laws and leisurely walks fill his days, with plenty abound to catch the eye. All is well on this enthusiastic stroll until a Heavenly falls from the sky, and Artorian can kiss his simple days good-bye.

Authors entertaining themselves, but not me.
Revisado: 03-23-23
I was looking forward to more progression toward the starting conditions of the Completionist series, but no. Instead, this is a short story (at best), padded into book length with WAY to much self-indulgent word-play, rehashed philosophy, and more character call-backs than Heinlein's final books.
The end of the twefth (!) book in this series would have been a great place to end it and start fresh with a new protagonist. The teenaged versions of Artorian and Ember in this book (unlucky 13) are uninteresting and encumbered by too much back-story to play ingenue. Meanwhile, any coherent RPG element has been deliberately excised from the story. Is this no longer LitRPG?
The narrator was the only bright spot.

But bitter rivalries and treachery threaten to derail the defence of Vervunhive, and it falls to Gaunt to take command of the Imperial forces and forge victory from an almost certain defeat.

It Really, Really Sucked
Revisado: 01-20-23
Reddit says this is the best Gaunt's Ghosts, so after a long string of wasting money on unfinishable Warhammer novels I thought this would be good.
Nope. It's crap. I finished it though.
Like, I still don't know who the antagonists were. Some other hive city, humans probably, but they might have been demons for all the background the story shares. How did they fall to chaos? What chaos god did they even fall to?
How can such compelling lore consistently produce so many poorly written novels? I have more than three dozen in my library and I've only been able to finish about six before giving up due to crap writing and stories I just don't care about.

Apparently a Headline isn't really Optional
Revisado: 11-03-22
The story wasn't entirely cogent, and this has nothing to do with the fact that it goes into bizzaro territory. Still, I finished it, which I don't always do, and will likely buy the next sequel that the book sets up.
The narrator is fine, but lacks range. He has perhaps four distinctly different voices and then close variations on those.

Not Human Psychos, but Alien
Revisado: 10-22-22
Every synopsis I read made it seem like a bunch of psycho carnies on a murder spree, and I wasn't interested in that. Then a friend told me the antagonists were inter-dimensional aliens. OK I'm interested.
The ending was poor, abrupt. Very good otherwise.

Best Eisenhorn since Xenos
Revisado: 11-17-21
Ok, it isn't Eisenhorn, but it's the same thread, and many of the same characters, so sort of a book 4. As such, it's better than book 2, and WAY better than crappy book 3.

Best 40K Yet!
Revisado: 11-09-21
After about a dozen 40K novels and collections, some good, some horrible, this was the first one that gave me a sense of urgency, that "What happens next?" feeling.
As soon as I finish this review I'm downloading Eisenhorn book 2.
Toby Longworth's narration was very good as usual, but as usual, he has to have a character who sounds like James Mason, and this time it's the hard boiled, shotgun toting arbitus (space cop).
Toby... please... if James Mason has to be in 40K, save him for one of the poncey characters, like Arch, or a GW exec.

Great Story, Great Narration
Revisado: 05-12-21
The story wasn't really a single story, but rather four or five short stories told in parallel. They take place in the same town, the same time, but they exist independently of each other. This is offputting and leaves wasted potential of plot had the characters interacted with each other.
Still, the stories were good, not eclipsed by gore.
The narration was very, very good. Some women can't do a believable male characterization (most men can't do a believable female characterization), but Angela Rysk was so good at all her characters that I'm searching for other titles she's done.

Engaging but not much horror, bad performance
Revisado: 04-28-21
The story was enjoyable enough for me to finish, which is only the case about half the time. There was far less horror than I expected; there's more horror in most Warhammer 40K novels. Nevertheless, the concept was fairly original and engaging, though some details regarding the concept are a bit contrived or preposterous.
This Michael Bradley mook can NOT do a female voice that isn't grating, and the voice of one of the male protagonists - the reformed fallen angel - sounds like a special ed Boris Karloff. That character voice was the most annoying I've ever heard on Audible.

Decent enough story, but of all the voices the narrator has, he chose James Mason to to play Abaddon. This is just disconcerting. Hilarious, but disconcerting.

Please learn how to pronounce "vehemently!"
Revisado: 02-09-21
I am really enjoying this series, but Zi'm 3 books in and no one has corrected the narrator's mispronunciation of the word "vehemently?" It may be petty, but it's annoying to be jarred out of the story every time I hear veh-HEH-ment-ly.
