Historia
Tony Webster and his clique first met Adrian Finn at school. Sex-hungry and book-hungry, they would navigate the girl-less sixth form together, trading in affectations, in-jokes, rumor, and wit. Maybe Adrian was a little more serious than the others, certainly more intelligent, but they all swore to stay friends for life. Now Tony is retired. He’s had a career and a single marriage, a calm divorce. He’s certainly never tried to hurt anybody. Memory, though, is imperfect. It can always throw up surprises, as a lawyer’s letter is about to prove.

One of the best books of the year

Flawless. Both an excellent book and audiobook. Bridges the gap between lit fiction and popular fiction without dulling the product.

Historia
Anthony Powell's universally acclaimed epic encompasses a four-volume panorama of twentieth century London. Hailed by Time as "brilliant literary comedy as well as a brilliant sketch of the times," A Dance to the Music of Time opens just after World War I. Amid the fever of the 1920s and the first chill of the 1930s, Nick Jenkins and his friends confront sex, society, business, and art.

Masterpiece
Revisado: 03-08-11
Powell's Music of Time books are a masterpiece of English literature. Massive in scope but ironically very narrow in its analysis of people, place and time, Powell devoted his life to these novels. His prose are rich, lyrical and incredibly smart. Simon Vance is excellent as always.

Historia
The author of the much honored two-volume biography of Henri Matisse unearths the life and work of the Nobel Prize and Pulitzer Prize winner Pearl Buck, whose novels in the 1930's and 40's were the first written for a Western audience to describe ordinary life in the still secret China of the late 19th and early 20th century.

Revisado: 06-15-10
A poignant analysis of one of the most important artists of the 20th century. This book not only educates the reader about Pearl Buck, her childhood and family life, it paints a detailed picture of pre-revolutionary China; chronicling the lifestyle of the missionaries who struggled to blend with and help the impoverished population there. Excellent non-fiction.

Historia
Bellow evokes all the rich colour and exotic customs of a highly imaginary Africa in this comic novel about a middle-aged American millionaire who, seeking a new, more rewarding life, descends upon an African tribe. Henderson's awesome feats of strength and his unbridled passion for life earns him the admiration of the tribe - but it is his gift for making rain that turns him from mere hero into messiah.

very good
Revisado: 02-24-10
Bellow is a thinker, and the story seems to be a platform for his ideas. That could leave you flat if Henderson wasn't such an excellent character. His travels in Africa and conversations with the few people that become his friends are really the life of the book. A few exciting sequences, but mostly an examination of life.
The reader does a great job. The voice he uses for Henderson is a very specific character choice, so much so that it puts the entire book in a certain context. I was left wondering if Henderson would have been a different man in my mind had I heard a flat reading or actually read the book.
