Historia
It’s the summer of ’77 in New York City, and the only thing more unnerving than the scorching heatwave is the rampant murder, leaving washed-up homicide detective Richard Dietrich on edge. When Dietrich investigates a brutal mob hit the brass doesn’t want him to solve, he goes from phoning it in to getting in over his head. Caught up in a mysterious second homicide with an even more perplexing perpetrator, Dietrich starts to second guess his instincts—and his memory—as he searches for answers at the bottom of a bottle.

Great Short Story
Revisado: 04-14-24
First of all, Ed Harris is awesome as the narrator. The story is really great, and the characters are deep in a short period of time and a short story. The ending took me by surprise.

Historia
After Tova Sullivan’s husband died, she began working the night shift at the Sowell Bay Aquarium, mopping floors and tidying up. Keeping busy has always helped her cope, which she’s been doing since her eighteen-year-old son, Erik, mysteriously vanished on a boat in Puget Sound over thirty years ago. Tova becomes acquainted with curmudgeonly Marcellus, a giant Pacific octopus living at the aquarium. Marcellus knows more than anyone can imagine but wouldn’t dream of lifting one of his eight arms for his human captors—until he forms a remarkable friendship with Tova.

A Mystery
Revisado: 01-16-24
I love mysteries, and it was so nice that no murder was involved this time. The characters are all likable and cute and funny. The narrator did a great job. This book was easy to listen to, but more than that the octopus was the best.

Historia
The story opens with the apparently accidental drowning of a sixth form student in the Norfolk countryside. As a matter of routine, or so it seems, the case passes across the desk of Detective Sergeant Smith, recently returned to work after an internal investigation into another case that has led to tensions between officers at Kings Lake police headquarters. As an ex-DCI, Smith could have retired by now, and it is clear that some of his superiors wish that he would do so.

Overall very good.
Revisado: 03-17-23
The narrator was great. The storyline was pretty good and at the end, it gave a pretty sad historical overview. The last chapter was weird though.
The best part was DCI’s wit and sarcasm.

Revisado: 01-05-23
The storyline is good and left me wanting to know more about Jim Bean. I’ll read another of these books. The narrator though is a good actor and you forget that the women voices are really a baritone man reading the part!

Historia
Photographer Isla Wilson is thrilled she's landed her dream job, but the clients who hired her are getting stranger by the day. It sounded so perfect—a month's assignment at the lush Scottish Highlands property of architect Alban McGregor, and his wife, Jessica. But in the woods, there's a playhouse with a chilling history. Two years ago, the McGregors' daughter Elodie was abducted and then died in that playhouse. The townspeople insist her abductor had to be a stranger in their town. Alban refuses to knock the playhouse down, even keeping a picture of it on his wall.

Meandering

The writing, story and narration are good. The book takes off into so many characters and story
lines that she ties together at end as best as possible—however, a little loosely.

This is the 2nd book I’ve heard about det Nils Shapiro and I love it. I like the mystery but really love the hard nosed yet compassionate Nils. He’s funny and sharp witted too. I’m listening to another in the series if he has one.

Historia
“The Heron” is the nickname a big-city accountant has attached to himself in his new home near San Diego, where he’s using the alias to avoid a hit man who may be after him. It seems a former client believes that The Heron has skipped town with several million dollars not his own. Don Winslow’s ensuing, entertaining yarn is by turns twisty, dark, and comical as we observe the delicate dance between the pursuer and the pursued.

Revisado: 01-22-22
By the quality of some of the books included in the membership. As a mystery lover, this book fulfilled my checklist of needs in a good read. Relatable characters- check, good storyline- check, good ending that tied up the ends - check. The narrator was very good, and although I wanted a happier ending, sometimes that just isn’t realized. Good job, girl!

Revisado: 10-26-20
I just loved this book! I liked the way Wilde’s one line zingers were placed in context and they made me laugh more than ever. The narrator did a great job and brought the characters to life. Of course, this book propelled me to read more about OW, whose beautiful but tragic life still resonates today.
