Historia
For Lieutenant Eve Dallas of the NYPSD, the job is a useful reminder of what she has to be grateful for this season. Hosting Roarke's big Irish family for the holiday may be challenging, but it’s a joyful improvement on her own dark childhood. Other couples aren’t as lucky as Eve and Roarke. The Reinholds, for example, are lying on the floor of their Downing Street apartment, stabbed and bludgeoned almost beyond recognition. Those who knew them are stunned - and even more heartbroken by the overwhelming evidence that they were murdered by their own son.

Fantastic as always-5 stars in all categories
Revisado: 09-23-15
I loved the connection of family & justice. I loved that despite being orphaned, Dallas, Rorke, and Nixie had all found families of their own. It also was real, and told the all too true story we see & hear each day- namely that we are ungrateful for our blessings. We forget to acknowledge that we don't accomplish anything alone. And we are reminded that there are those out there who refuse responsibility for their actions & actually think they are entitled to whatever they can grab, regardless of the fact that their desires are impacting others sometimes to death.
My bucket list has been the goal of thanking as many people as possible for their gifts of entertainment or artistry over the years. So, thank you, Nora Roberts for this series. I've enjoyed your work throughly. Your books are one of the few that I read again & again. They are also books that I think highly enough of to recommend to others. Even got my daughter to read again! Thank you, thank you, thank you!

The narrator did not read the book but treated it as an oration. While listening I had the impression that he felt he was on stage delivering a Shakespearean soliloquey, such as Hamlet's "To be or not to be". If you are considering purchasing the book, please be sure to listen to a sample first.

Historia
In pitch-perfect voices, Kathryn Stockett creates three extraordinary women whose determination to start a movement of their own forever changes a town, and the way women—mothers, daughters, caregivers, friends—view one another. A deeply moving novel filled with poignancy, humor, and hope, The Help is a timeless and universal story about the lines we abide by, and the ones we don't.

Leave it on the shelf
Revisado: 03-28-13
What could have made this a 4 or 5-star listening experience for you?
Much better writing on the part of Carl Hiaasen.
What was most disappointing about Carl Hiaasen’s story?
Very poor writing. I got the impression that the author got up one morning and decided to write a story. Since he had no real purpose in writing beyond satisfying his publisher, he just wrote and wrote bringing in earlier characters to fill the pages. At the end of the day he was able to mail the finished manuscript and have it published. If Carl Hiaasen was an unknown writer, this book would have been refused by every publisher that it was submitted to.
What does Stephen Hoye bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?
Stephen Hoye is a very professional reader. He always brings books alive with his reading.
You didn’t love this book... but did it have any redeeming qualities?
No!!!
Any additional comments?
Publishers should not accept books from a known writer with a lower criteria than an unknown writer

A Grown-Up Kind of Pretty is a powerful saga of three generations of women, plagued by hardships and torn by a devastating secret, yet inextricably joined by the bonds of family. Fifteen-year-old Mosey Slocumb-spirited, sassy, and on the cusp of womanhood-is shaken when a small grave is unearthed in the backyard, and determined to figure out why it's there. Liza, her stroke-ravaged mother, is haunted by choices she made as a teenager. But it is Jenny, Mosey's strong and big-hearted grandmother....

Could have been read much better
Revisado: 02-19-13
What did you like best about A Grown-Up Kind of Pretty? What did you like least?
The book was very well written. All of the requirements of a good book were all there. There was lots of humor and suspense. The book was a very fast and exciting read. The writer wrote from several perspectives.
I did not like the reading. Just because the writer can create a wonderful book it does not easily follow that she can also read it for a listening reader. The book was read in a monotone which might have been good for a scientific non fiction book but not a multi-faceted beautiful piece of fiction.
What was one of the most memorable moments of A Grown-Up Kind of Pretty?
Mosey continually tests herself with a pregnancy test to assure herself that she was not pregnant.
What didn’t you like about Joshilyn Jackson’s performance?
I am writing a review of an audio book. The performance was not in any way professional. Most professional readers have several voices that they use when reading a book. This book was written from the viewpoint of three women. The writer/reader should have created three voices for the three women. There were several other characters that should have a different voice, two or three of them were men. An audio book is not the same as a book in print. Audible has several very good professional readers that have up to ten male and female voices as well as children's voices.
Could you see A Grown-Up Kind of Pretty being made into a movie or a TV series? Who should the stars be?
No! It is a wonderful story and although it has action, the real beauty of the book is the thoughts and concerns of the three main characters.

Historia
Born a generation apart and with very different ideas about love and family, Mariam and Laila are two women brought jarringly together by war, by loss, and by fate. As they endure the ever escalating dangers around them, in their home as well as in the streets of Kabul, they come to form a bond that makes them both sisters and mother-daughter to each other, and that will ultimately alter the course not just of their own lives but of the next generation.

Magnificent
Revisado: 05-29-07
This is truly a magnificent book. Having read the Kite Runner, I was expecting the book to be good, and I was not disappointed. The main character in Kite Runner was not an exemplary character although his character takes a turn for the better in the latter part of the book. In A Thousand Splendid Suns, the characters are true throughout. This was a book that I could not put down, once I had started. I would not recommend that this book be read in the abridged format. Reading the abridged version of this book would cause the reader to lose too much.

"How did it all begin?" "What happens when we die?" These are just two of the questions Reverend Oliver "Buzz" Thomas hears centrist Christians asking as he travels across the United States, and he knows that their voices are not being heard. They're people of faith, not of politics, and they want more from their religion than a voter's guide.

An Absolute Must Read
Revisado: 05-21-07
The author explains the source of those perplexing oddities that beset us everyday. He attacks many of the myths of Christianity and in a quiet and unassuming way he explains many of the sources of our current belief system. I could not determine from the book, the author's sect in Christianity. He needs to be brought in whenever there is religious strife so that he can explain the truth. I would recommend the book to everyone. This is not a book for Christians alone but for everyone. My only objection was that it was too short. His mother should convince him to write another but longer book.

Honey Santana, impassioned, willful, possibly bipolar, self-proclaimed "queen of lost causes", has a scheme to help rid the world of irresponsibility, indifference, and dinnertime sales calls. She's taking rude, gullible Relentless, Inc., telemarketer Boyd Shreave and his less-than-enthusiastic mistress, Eugenie, into the wilderness of Florida's Ten Thousand Islands for a gentle lesson in civility. What she doesn't know is that she's being followed by her Honey-obsessed former employer.

Fabulous
Revisado: 11-30-06
I am disappointed with all of the negative reviews. This is one of his first that did not make fun of Florida Tourism. I think that Hiaasen is a fabulous writer that uses Satire to show us where we fail. This book may not have been on a par with Skinny Dip (His best book), but it was up there very close. If you have ever dealt with telephone call centers or telephone solicitors or telephone scams, this is a MUST READ.

Cute
Revisado: 11-27-06
Very cute little love story. Might have been better if it had been lengthened. Unfortunately the author uses too many adverbs and adjectives. Perhaps this was to lengthen the story, but the message can be put across much better by using something other than a menagerie of adverbs.

Definitely a must read. The author appears to have done extensive research and brings all of the cities of Pakistan and Afghanistan to life. I was not able to put it down until it was finished. I found myself sitting in the car waiting to turn off the motor so that I would not be kept in suspense. Unfortunately, as soon as one suspense drama was completed, another started, so, as I said, I couldn't put it down
