Quick, witty, fun family read. Unique and endearing characters, hilarious situations, and a happy ending. What's not to like? I would highly recommend it. Music and narration cast make this a winning story.

Firstly, this is definitely adult reading, exploring multiple dimensions on what it means to declare love, show love, be loved and accept love. There are initial scenes in brothels which may not be to some people's taste. Yet, parts of the story are bittersweet and poignant, intense, humorous and suspenseful. Both primary characters grow in depth and maturity, are well developed and well written. Alaric's and Emma's coupling is a tense relationship juxtaposing physical passion versus intimacy and vulnerability. While Emma grows from extremely naive to insightful, Alaric grows from cold to caring. Along the way with the support of excellently written family characters many mysteries are solved. Erin Mallon provides competent narration.

Ever wondered about the backstory of all those jumbotron proposals, when the couple shares their experience with 45,000 of their closest strangers? The Proposal is a fun look at what happens when those 15 minutes of fame and social media explode into relationship disaster. H and h are well developed characters struggling to balance life, work, family and relationship expectations. Secondary characters add spice to story, too. The second in a series/stand alone story. Guillory is a competent author and its a pretty quick read and looking forward to the next story, Narration by Edwards, okay as well.

Well paced story, with well developed characters, Slightly Dangerous is witty, and fun. Since I haven't read the entire series, it seems this is a great stand alone story. Themes center around discovering true identities, loyalties and families. Strong H and h engaged in timeless issues of self discovery and risking vulnerability. Balogh provides solid writing and Landor excellent narration. Highly recommended.

I have been waiting for Imogene's story, and it was well worth the wait. Listened to this one straight through as Rosalyn Landor's performance and Mary Balogh writing were outstanding. Witty, poignant, engaging, well developed characters confronting the unexpected. There is romance, intrigue, humor, excellent supporting characters and a host of animals given unique personalities. I like that the H and h do not disengage their brains when the romance begins,(as often seems to happen in many stories in this genre) but Percy and Imogene continue to embrace their capacity to reexamine the past and redefine themselves for the future they need. Both become stronger individually and together to the benefit of all around them. Be warned, this one may cause one to ask "what would I do in that situation?'

Not sure why it took so long to complete this book but, unlike other quickly devoured audiobooks, I felt compelled to put it down several times over the course of a couple of months. There were many elements, familiar favorite characters from previous books in series, dependent dowdy relative transformed to sophisticated heiress, many eligible suitors, creepy villain vanquished, all of which should have provided an excellent read. However, somehow the underlying theme of selfishness kept resurfacing and ironically it seems that ultimately the relationship between Eliza and Kit was propelled more by lust and the belief they each deserved to get what they wanted, despite whom else might be hurt in the process. I liked them more at the beginning than the end, yet found some of their choices questionable and lacking sincerity/integrity. Perhaps when I am able to reread it straight through, I will appreciate the story more and feel less trapped in a peculiar fairy tale of Cinderella weds the Wolf. Narration was acceptable.

An Unfulfilled Promise ...Only Tedious

Revisado: 01-04-19

Of All the Survivors Club members and couplings, Ralph's story seems to be the least developed and his acceptance of the bargain proposed by Chloe begins the relationship from the weakest position toward a downward trajectory. She marries to advantage, despite her argument that she is a more mature offering than any newly out of schoolroom miss. Yet, she seeks everything a young miss has been reared to pursue. Ralph has battle scars and has determined he can offer all the material accoutrements of position and security while withholding passion and emotion, making their relationship one dimensional and predictable. The secondary characters far outshine the H and h in this one, as relatives and friends possess much more personality, humor and depth than the two main characters. Chloe is a strange mixture of bland yet manipulative, vacillating between administrative competence, sexual ignorance and personal insecurity, (all of which which she uses strategically like a spoiled child to get what she wants, and then complains when she gets what she wants). I wanted to like her but there was very little to recommend her or the relationship with Ralph, and at times Chloe is very cruel to Ralph. There is very limited meaningful exchange in conversation and lots of repetitive dialogue or internal monologues, and I found myself increasing the speed to move the story along. After five hours, I was still anticipating a promise of redemption and happiness. After eight hours, I no longer cared, despite the great narration talents of Rosalyn Landor. I may complete the book at some point (only because I am committed to the Survivors Club Series and the others have been great reads). But, I think I could move on to the next in series without missing much, only a pity...

This is a must read/listen which shatters the mold of predictable romance plots. The characters are wonderfully developed, and so believable, we are swept along with the story and invited to join them on the journey. Even as part of an outstanding series, Only Enchanting, is most memorable. Once again, Mary Balogh captures the heart and imagination with vivid imagery, while Rosalyn Landor's excellent vocal talent brings each unique character to life.

Two potentially brilliant people, struggling with their inner demons of angst and insecurity, form a private alliance based on a public lie. These are not the Violet and Sebastian introduced previously in the series, as there is little wit and humor present in their verbal sparing, or in their interactions with friends and family. Violet is so coldly unlikable that it is tedious to wait for her to thaw. Sebastian is so pathetically patient in his unrequited love, as to border on self immolation. Unlike the other books in the series which commanded nonstop reading/listening, after more than 5 hours in I found myself increasing the speed to move the story along. I will probably complete it, (because I hate to leave things unfinished, not because the novel compels me to do so), hopefully to a more favorable review.
Rosalyn Landor, remains an exceptional narrator, and most redeeming factor in this offering.

Well written and well narrated, the Heiress Effect offers many complex and interesting characters struggling with issues of self identity, freedom, franchise, racism, sexism, healthcare and medical ethics, and civil rights. Characters are believable, and differing opinions are presented with subtly and comedy. Defining family and the rights and responsibilities of each family member in the care and support of one another provide recurring themes throughout novel. There is romance, humor, wit and poignancy, adding to the strength and depth of the series. However, there were times when it felt like two stories welled together (Jane and Oliver versus Emily and Anjan) and the ping-pong-ing between relationships diluted the power and pace of each story.. That being said, it is recommended.
