Historia
Some of the smartest commentary about what’s happening in America is coming from a comedian—this comedian being Bill Maher. If you want to understand what’s wrong with this country, it turns out that one of the best informed and most thought-provoking analysts is this very funny pothead.

The very wise bottom line I got is that Americans need to shut up and get along.
Revisado: 05-31-24
I watch or read the news, think stuff, then watch or read Bill Maher to hear him (and his writers) articulate the same basic thoughts far better (and funnier) than I ever could. I think there are a lot of us. It's hard to believe that someone whose messages generally boil down to don't be crazy and don't be an a**h**e could be so controversial. We should all be listening to him and similar voices of reason much more often!

Still the best way to experience this story!
Revisado: 06-18-23
I first read the books in 1977, and have read them again a dozen times since. The Peter Jackson movie versions are excellent, but to get the full joy of them, they need to be read. Even better, let a wonderful actor like Rob Inglis read them to you. The story hasn't lost a bit of shine in 46 years!

An Immigrant's Love Letter to the West

Historia
For all of the West's failings—terrible food, cold weather and questionable politicians with funny hair to name a few—it has its upsides. Konstantin would know. Growing up in the Soviet Union, he experienced first-hand the horrors of a socialist paradise gone wrong, having lived in extreme poverty with little access to even the most basic of necessities. It wasn't until he moved to the UK that Kisin found himself thriving in an open and tolerant society, receiving countless opportunities he would never have had otherwise.

I'd say it needs to be required reading, but that's too authoritarian
Revisado: 07-16-22
This should be required reading in every American college, and maybe everywhere else. It terrifies me that younger generations do not remember the Soviet Union and have no frame of reference by which to realize just how lucky they are to live in Western society. The book is well-written, approachable, intelligent, and funny. Konstantin Kisin seems like such a genuinely nice guy that I think the lefty hate mob will have a hard time convincing people he's really a Hitlery monster. I hope so anyway. We need to listen to him!

The Coddling of the American Mind

Historia
The culture of “safety” and its intolerance of opposing viewpoints has left many young people anxious and unprepared for adult life. Lukianoff and Haidt offer a comprehensive set of reforms that will strengthen young people and institutions, allowing us all to reap the benefits of diversity, including viewpoint diversity. This is a book for anyone who is confused by what’s happening on college campuses today, or has children, or is concerned about the growing inability of Americans to live and work and cooperate across party lines.

Necessary

I wish this were required reading everywhere. If people paid attention to this analysis and advice, I think we could calm things down a great deal.

A Relief to Hear This
Revisado: 11-05-21
Professor McWhorter lays out in clear, beautifully articulate detail exactly the things that have been mumbling around in my not-so-articulate brain for the past few years. His words are sensitive, understanding, and caring. He has, I think, a razor-sharp understanding of human nature. This is not a book for someone who just wants to "own the libs" or seek justification for their partisan anger. It's a book for people who genuinely want to see everyone come together to overcome racism; not for those who just want to look like they are.

Great Insight Into Witnesses
Revisado: 10-25-20
This is the ultimate cautionary tale on just how wary lawyers and investigators should be when dealing with people who seem to want to "cooperate." It's also written in a great style which puts you in the place of those investigators, on the same emotional crazy train, as well as showing how events such as these deeply affect everyone involved. I've been a lawyer ten years now, and I think all newbie lawyers ought to be encouraged to read it! It's also lots of fun.
