Intriguing plot
Revisado: 02-16-24
Intriguing plot, moves rapidly. As an American, I highly recommend you read it instead of listening to it n Audible. I found many of the accents very hard to understand

a fan's feast

Mel Brooks is clever, funny and oh, so human. His narration had the feel of sitting in a cocktail bar shooting the breeze. A delight

excellent book, terrible narration
Revisado: 08-22-21
I love the book, but am having trouble finishing it. The narration is terrible. She is overly dramatic, sounding like a middle school girl, speaking in all cap words and too many exclamation points. It is annoying and does not seem to fit the formal culture presented in the book.

I wanted to like this book
Revisado: 03-12-20
Sigh. I wanted so much to like this book. I love long books with multiple story lines. I am a special educator, so I am fascinated by neuroscience. I enjoy books which provide vivid visual descriptions which draw you into the setting. But good grief, enough is enough. The character can't just be alone with her thoughts in the hospital lobby, we have to know all her thoughts, have all those thoughts analyzed AND know the chair she is sitting in is apricot colored leather. It actually has an intriguing story line and the author writes dialog especially well. But is is so dense in detail and in internal monologue, analysis of characters thoughts and actions, the history of psychology and neurology, plus the endless musing about cranes. I almost gave up several times, but finally finished. It left me vaguely unsatisfied. Not time wasted, just wish it was better. I don't know how much of this is because I listened to it on Audible instead of reading. The narrator had a quiet calm voice that seemed to make the endless detail worse

Meet Eleanor Oliphant: She struggles with appropriate social skills and tends to say exactly what she's thinking. Nothing is missing in her carefully timetabled life of avoiding social interactions, where weekends are punctuated by frozen pizza, vodka, and phone chats with Mummy. But everything changes when Eleanor meets Raymond, the bumbling and deeply unhygienic IT guy from her office.

Just couldn't stand the narrator
Revisado: 09-07-17
I want to read this, but this narrator was horrible. I gave up. At first it was a weak pompous voice, but when she moved to voicing other charactees it was like a bad cartoon. The accents were so thick I could not understand her. Will read on Kindle . The overall rating is a guess. Could not finish the first chapter

Historia
Britt-Marie can't stand mess. She eats dinner at precisely the right time and starts her day at six in the morning because only lunatics wake up later than that. And she is not passive-aggressive. Not in the least. It's just that sometimes people interpret her helpful suggestions as criticisms, which is certainly not her intention. But at 63, Britt-Marie has had enough. She finally walks out on her loveless 40-year marriage and finds a job in the only place she can: Borg, a small, derelict town devastated by the financial crisis.

Warm, wise and funny
Revisado: 10-08-16
I wonder if I had read this one first (before I read A Man Called Ove) whether Britt Marie would have gotten 5 stars. I liked this book. It got better as the story unfolded, but couldn't help making comparisons. In Ove, the main character was painfully, awkwardly, funny. The other characters were not well drawn, more like props to help the story along. To me, Britt Marie, while sympathetic, was never likable. I guess I just don't like fussy women. But the supporting characters were pure delight. Because this is an Audible review, I will add that I did like the narrator on Ove better.
