Powerful and honest
Revisado: 09-11-23
This was such a tremendously impactful book and the narrator did phenomenal. It pulled you in and held your attention. The subject matter is a really hard one to hear about but this isn’t just a good and necessary book for adults to listen to, it’s one parents can listen to with their middle schoolers. In the world we live in, it’s a subject we absolutely need yo wrestle with and be alert for.

Historia
After Tova Sullivan’s husband died, she began working the night shift at the Sowell Bay Aquarium, mopping floors and tidying up. Keeping busy has always helped her cope, which she’s been doing since her eighteen-year-old son, Erik, mysteriously vanished on a boat in Puget Sound over thirty years ago. Tova becomes acquainted with curmudgeonly Marcellus, a giant Pacific octopus living at the aquarium. Marcellus knows more than anyone can imagine but wouldn’t dream of lifting one of his eight arms for his human captors—until he forms a remarkable friendship with Tova.

A very enjoyable book
Revisado: 09-08-23
The narrators do an excellent job with a beautiful story! The author balances hard losses with an innovative tale of friendships that help the main characters as they move onward through life. I loved it!

Took some time to engage with the character
Revisado: 04-19-23
I enjoyed this story but it took some time for me to be drawn in and become interested in Willa. I loved Serafina from the get go and perhaps I was expecting to feel the same about Willa but her character had so many jarring traits with what I personally value that it took some time for me to care for her.

Different narrator
Revisado: 10-10-22
The book was good but not as good as the previous ones and the new narrator took getting used to. I also struggled to enjoy the addition of their new young friend. I felt like the way they talked to him and related to him, now being older themselves, made the book a bit challenging to enjoy. Like it didn’t fit with the other books at all.

Great storyline development but the violence was a bit much
Revisado: 09-26-22
This book was more gruesome than any of the others with much more violence and death than I personally would want a 10-12 year old to be reading. I suppose it has been building throughout the series but I feel like this book tipped the scales of balance in a manner that takes it beyond what it’s projected audience age should read. The extent of it seemed unnecessary. I love Serafina and Braeden as characters and watching them grow and develop their skills has been great. I’m not looking for a lighthearted storyline. I just didn’t see why grievous injury couldn’t have been the extent of things. I’m also confused about the introduction of kittens. If they’d been barn kittens that came from the stable and had lost their mother, that would have been explanation enough. Instead she found them at some point in the past in the chimney of an abandoned building? Did I miss this in the last book? Why was she in an abandoned building anyway? Doesn’t feel developed properly. Instead it seems thrown in at random. I enjoyed the story. Robert Beatty is a great storyteller. I just left the story wishing I could make some changes to it.

Initially hard to engage with
Revisado: 09-23-22
The third book is difficult to follow initially, especially in audiobook format. It was easy to lose focus or get distracted from the story and it takes a long time for the storyline to build and progress anyway. I found my hardcover copy and ended up reading the first few chapters so that I could get pulled in to the story. Now that I’ve listened to the whole audiobook I wonder if I ever made it through the book. Nothing really felt familiar. In any case, I did enjoy the story. It just took a while to be pulled in. The characters continue to learn and grow and adapt, fleshing them out nicely.

Historia
The kingdom of Cornucopia was once the happiest in the world. It had plenty of gold, a king with the finest moustache you could possibly imagine, and butchers, bakers, and cheesemongers whose exquisite foods made a person dance with delight when they ate them. Everything was perfect - except for the misty Marshlands to the north, which, according to legend, were home to the monstrous Ickabog. Anyone sensible knew that the Ickabog was just a myth to scare children into behaving. But the funny thing about myths is that sometimes they take on a life of their own.

Worth reading/listening to
Revisado: 07-10-22
I started out reading the book but it was hard for me to stick with because it was slow moving and increasingly depressing. I decided to try the audio version because I know Rowling is a masterful storyteller but reading it wasn’t engaging me enough. Honestly, it remained depressing. But then came the escape from the orphanage and hope began to bloom at the marsh. Honestly, the last 14 chapters redeemed this book for me. Prior to that it was a fairytale of gloom and doom dragging on and on with little light to cling to. The ending I thoroughly enjoyed riding along for!
