Historia
Frederik Pohl was on a streak when this Hugo Award-finalist novel was published in 1980. Now back in print after an absence of nearly a decade, this unique science fiction novel is as fresh and entertaining as ever. The story begins when the hero of Gateway finances an expedition to a distant alien spaceship that may end famine forever. On the ship, the explorers find a human boy, and evidence that reveals a powerful alien civilization is thriving on a transport ship headed right for Earth....

Disappointing story. Outstanding performance!
Revisado: 05-31-21
The story is disappointing because its predictable and dull. The reader’s performance breathes life into the story and the characters. The reader’s performance made this book worth listening to.
The story finally came alive in its last three chapters.

Historia
In a vastly overpopulated near-future world, businesses have taken the place of governments and now hold all political power. States exist merely to ensure the survival of huge transnational corporations. Advertising has become hugely aggressive and boasts some of the world’s most powerful executives. Through advertising, the public is constantly deluded into thinking that all the products on the market improve the quality of life.

Entertaining Pohl Adventure. Not ‘Star Class.’
Revisado: 05-28-21
I was looking forward to listening (reading) another entertaining work of Frederick Pohl. Yet, the story is quite dated and a bit problematic in today’s world.
Also, the story has a weird and slow start. Once it gets going, it’s good. Yet, it skips over plot points that it took ‘pages’ to develop.
Recommended if you are a fan of Pohl.

Niblock House is a rising executive at General Technics, one of a few all-powerful corporations. His work is leading General Technics to the forefront of global domination, both in the marketplace and politically - it's about to take over a country in Africa. Donald Hogan is his roommate, a seemingly sheepish bookworm. But Hogan is a spy, and he's about to discover a breakthrough in genetic engineering that will change the world...and kill him. Society is squeezed into hive-living madness by god-like mega computers and mass-marketed psychedelic drugs.

Excellent Performance & Story
Revisado: 05-14-21
While this John Brunner book is a good read, its narration makes it a much better story.
Even better is how Erik Bergmann vocalizes each of the characters and narrates the story. Rather than just reading the words on the page, Mr. Bergmann brings the story to life.
Highly recommended! This is an excellent Audible listen.

In 2204, humanity is expanding into the wider galaxy in leaps and bounds. Cutting-edge technology of linked jump gates has rendered most forms of transportation - including starships - virtually obsolete. Every place on Earth, every distant planet humankind has settled, is now a step away from any other. And all seems wonderful - until a crashed alien spaceship of unknown origin is found on a newly located world 89 light-years from Earth, carrying a cargo as strange as it is horrifying. To assess the potential of the threat a high-powered team is dispatched to investigate. But one of them may not be all they seem....

Historia
Golan Trevize, former councilman of the First Foundation, has chosen the future, and it is Gaia. A superorganism, Gaia is a holistic planet with a common consciousness so intensely united that every dewdrop, every pebble, every being, can speak for all - and feel for all. It is a realm in which privacy is not only undesirable, it is incomprehensible. But is it the right choice for the destiny of mankind? While Trevize feels it is, that is not enough. He must know.

Disappointing as a Listen. May be a better read.
Revisado: 04-20-21
While I am a fan of Isaac Asimov and the Foundation series, I struggled to finish this book for three main reasons.
• One, the readers voice was inappropriate for this title. The readers voice is mostly monotone. So, the droning made it difficult to get into the story and stay with the story for any length of time. Plus, the reader’s monotone voice made it difficult for him to read the character’s voices. Frequently, he would start as a character’s voice and then switch back to his primary voice. So, it was hard to tell when he meant to change the character.
• Two, the production quality is poor. Most productions require some edits. Most of those are edits are seamless and inaudible to the listener. However, with this book many of the edits are quite audible because the reader’s tone changes, and the background noise changes. These edits happen most frequently in the first two-thirds of the book.
• Three, the story repeated several of its elements over and over without reaching a solid conclusion on any of its discussion points. The two main characters (Bliss and Trevize) argue endlessly over being an ‘Isolate’ (an individual) versus being one of the Gaia collective. In the book’s beginning, it’s understood as part of the character’s definition. Yet, it becomes distracting when this same argument is repeated throughout the entire book. Moreover, this is one of many arguments between Bliss and Trevize. These arguments don’t advance either’s point. Instead, the story stalls while these two characters bicker.
If this ‘book’ were not on Audible (a listening experience) and instead it was something to see on a Kindle or in a physical book, it would have been easier to skip the poor sections. Since it wasn’t, it was a struggle to skip the boring parts without missing some of the story.
Unfortunately, this is not a recommended listen. Instead, read Asimov’s previous book _Foundation’s Edge_.

while the performance and production are flawless, the story left me wondering what was the point of this tale.
