As good as a history read can be. Due to a life lived as well as person could. I would give 10 stars if I could, for it is not every day that an audio book brings tears to my eyes.

The ill fated chang kai-shek

As I believe that I am the first person to write a review on this fast moving account of the china's war of resistance I feel that it is necessary to proclaim how valuable this book is for the WWII buff. Most people are aware of the fact that China was involved in the war but they are not aware to what extent. China in fact was the first theater of WWII and experienced some of the first and most brutal communal war crimes of the war. This book is some what biased towards the Nationalist point of view and that of Chang Kai-Shek in particular. However it explains the communist point of view as well. After reading-listening to this book I came away with a feeling that the communists let the Nationalist camp bare the brunt of all the fighting while waiting for the war to end. Having saved its forces for the upcoming civil war the Communists were better poised to fight then the badly beat National forces. Thus leading to the current communist government in Bejing. As you might be able to tell I was left with a bad taste with the actions of the communist forces durring the battle for Chinas fight for survival. I would suggest this book to any one who was either interested sino-american relations or just WWII it's self.

A real explanation of the reasons for war in Iraq.

Personally I have much reading on the war against al-qeada, and the taliban. However I have not read up as much on the war in Iraq and its reasons. This book was perfect for filling in the gaps. I found the lead up to these wars very interesting and well thought out, going through WWII to current times while explaining the geo-political basis that brought the U.S. to its current position in the world. I also found the description of the United States in the Islamic worlds eyes enlightening. I would recommend this book to anyone who came of age before 9-11 and to anyone who's family had a member in the armed forces. All around very enlightening.

Another North Korean winner

Somthing about the North Korean non-ficton does it for me. If you like "Nothing to envy" you will like this. Reveals the horrors that every day North Koreans have to face if they step out of line. Every time I read on of these North Korean non fictions I am truly thankful to be an American. It also makes you realize how insignificant your day to day problems can really be. Scoop up this gem you will not regret it. Top notch

A decent book however is very slow. No real plot conflicts. If you are in to these types of books it might work for you, me however this was an experiment. Not my everyday listening. I will go back to non-fiction.

The bar of manhood

When I first began this book I was some what disappointed. The reader at times can be hard to understand. The book is all so written as an account in some ones life and therefore has had little effort put in to creating a gripping story line. However getting further in to the book I realised what this book really is, a story of one of the bravest and best of the species called human beings. Durring a time when any normal person would have done anything possable not to go and anything else to leave Mr. Pilecki volunteered to go and choose to stay, in order to complete his work. He is the bar in which any man should strive to reach. I feel as I shall try harder to be a stronger better human,man, after listening to this book. I recommened this book highly for a few different reasons but mainly because it has changed my perspective.

Reads like a spreadsheet of war crimes and there statistics. The first part of the book was very hard to get through, however it became easier and easier. Wasnt my favorite book but I am very glad I listened to it. It gave me a real feal as to the gravity and scale of the Soviet and German crimes.

Buy this book. I dont normally read fiction but this book was top notch. North Korea is such a great topic setting for a book. I LOVED IT.

Would you consider the audio edition of The Last Refuge to be better than the print version?

This book is great. The only thing that I really didn't like was the extreme over statement of Bin ladens role in the soviet war in Afganistan. He survived one attack on his moutain hide out and left for Pakistan as fast as he could. And remained in pakistan for the rest of the so called "jihad." His role in the jihad was a man with money to give and pretty much nothing else.
