Historia
It’s 1984, and life has changed beyond recognition. Airstrip One, formerly known as Great Britain, is a place where Big Brother is always watching, and nobody can hide. Except, perhaps, for Winston Smith. Whilst working at the Ministry of Truth, rewriting history, he secretly dreams of freedom. And in a world where love and sex are forbidden, where it’s hard to distinguish between friend and foe, he meets Julia and O’Brien and vows to rebel.

The real book is great
Revisado: 05-06-24
I would prefer the real book simply read read without the pauses, noises and the actors' delight in hearing themself utilize a wide repertoire of voices. The main character's voice in particular is not close to the voice of someone who is at their own peril contesting Big Brother. I think it was free so I cannot complain, but the fanfare takes away from the original novel.

Historia
You may be surprised to learn that microchips are the new oil—the scarce resource on which the modern world depends. Today, military, economic, and geopolitical power are built on a foundation of computer chips. Virtually everything—from missiles to microwaves—runs on chips, including cars, smartphones, the stock market, even the electric grid. Until recently, America designed and built the fastest chips and maintained its lead as the #1 superpower, but America’s edge is in danger of slipping, undermined by players in Taiwan, Korea, and Europe taking over manufacturing.

Historia
Rare Earth Frontiers is a work of human geography that serves to demystify the powerful elements that make possible the miniaturization of electronics, green energy and medical technologies, and essential telecommunications and defense systems. Julie Michelle Klinger draws attention to the fact that the rare earths we rely on most are as common as copper or lead, and this means the implications of their extraction are global. Klinger excavates the rich historical origins and ongoing ramifications of the quest to mine rare earths in ever more impossible places.

This is not about rare earth's
Revisado: 04-03-21
The book is about geopolitics. rare earths are popular. There is nothing useful regarding uses, economics, distribution of, cost of extraction, space or anything scientist or investors or marketers or entrepreneurs can use. The author considers all these facile occupations. The book IMO was written to sell & make monery,. The research required for the book would take ten minutes and then just a bunch of dated opinion. I will admit, I only made it through 3 chapters before writing this. Too many fake books out there these days.

too basic
Revisado: 05-27-18
The author explains right up front that this is not a book for investors. He spends an inordinate amount of time explaining what the market cap is. I cannot help but give this the analogy, you are to make dynamite, however, safety issues will be skipped and detailed instructions will not be given. That said, I will study what I can about the author & his other works, he does show you where the path begins.

Historia
Most books about the history of humanity pursue either a historical or a biological approach, but Dr. Yuval Noah Harari breaks the mold with this highly original book. From examining the role evolving humans have played in the global ecosystem to charting the rise of empires, Sapiens integrates history and science to reconsider accepted narratives, connect past developments with contemporary concerns, and examine specific events within the context of larger ideas.

not much history
Revisado: 01-14-18
What was most disappointing about Yuval Noah Harari’s story?
This does not give much history, but more opinions presented as facts. I was hoping to learn more about the last 50,000 years of Homo Sapiens, but that is not included for the most part.

a must read for a long term investor
Revisado: 02-08-14
What was the most compelling aspect of this narrative?
The author identifies 15 characteristics of good companies for investment in companies that can pay off big over 25 years. Identification of good management is a key theme.
What’s the most interesting tidbit you’ve picked up from this book?
If a company is to grow a few hundred percent or more, much more, over 25 years, does it really matter that much if you pay an extra 50 cents per share now? That, let us say 1.5% higher price on a good company that will continue to grow could cost a few hundred percent. Good companies rarely fall to bargain prices.
Any additional comments?
This book is one of Warren Buffet's favorites, and when it comes to the recommendation within to perform "Skuttlebutt", Warren certainly does. It is a good companion to The Intelligent Investor, another classic worth re-reading.

Historia
One of the most respected voices on Wall Street, Meredith Whitney shot to global prominence in 2007 when her warnings of a looming crisis in the financial sector proved all too prescient. Now, in her first book, she expands upon her biggest call since the financial crisis. Whitney offers a sobering vision of the next few decades, with the coastal states continuing to struggle while the central corridor (Texas to North Dakota) continues to thrive. Whitney also offers practical ideas to help the struggling parts of the country - before the fate of the states becomes irreversible.

A good read / listen

Any additional comments?
This book delves into various state government financial obligations, and gives a good history of the origination of the various policies. The states in the best and worst financial shape are described. If one wants to have a basic understanding of our financial situation, instead of a pretend emotional pile of assumptions that passes for knowledge, please read this to get a piece of the puzzle. (If you have not read dozens of books on economics, this book will still be intelligible. You might also look at Meridith's other works, including USA Inc., a free online presentation ... dated but still relevant.)
