This is definitely a book that should be read and not listened to. The story is fascinating but the sing song tone of the narrator made it almost unbearable. I never would have finished if it has been any longer.

Look. I like a heartwarming family saga about the triumph of the less abled, but this one was just meh! The story took a long time to get to the predictable finish and the narration was annoying. I agree with others who complained about the mechanical voice of Eugene. Does the narrator think that is how he heard himself in his head? I think not. The best way to celebrate those without speech ability would be to narrate their thoughts in a clear and concise "normal" tone, the dance way in which they are written. Overall, I was hoping for some crazy twist or somebody to make the 11 hours worth while. Alas, it was not to be.

I have to wonder if Ken Follett simply had committed to another book and needed to spit one out or worse, did he license his name to some second year writing student? I even triple checked the author's name to confirm it was really him. Follet is one of my favorite authors and I have read almost every book he's written but this is so far from the genres that made him famous that I have to believe it was written under duress.
The book was hokey from the start. Even some of the names were awful, i.e. Barrington Jones. ugh!
The "protagonist" is so narcissistic and unlikable that I almost wished her to fail. She only cares about herself and what everyone can do for her, even her friend who just got raped! Her father is a joke and yet she continues to forgive him as though what he does to her is nothing.
The other Follet books that swerve away from his traditional style have also been lacking but at least readable. I just wish he would stick to what he does best.

First, I love King as a writer but not as a narrator. Just don't like his voice. otherwise, the book was just OK. I understand what he was trying to do but it just never seemed to get there. The first and last stories are the best but the rest just seemed pointless.

It really took a long time to get to the action party of the story but once you get there you realize the set up was necessary to understand how things unfold.

My heart breaks for the author and her family and as a child of a mentally ill parent, I know the incredible toll it takes on your life but this story was just too long. I think it might give some solace to others in similar situations but there were many times where I thought it had ended, and it should of ended but then went on and on without really adding much content. We knew early on that her sister was gone and the possible causes of her illness and we learned about the few really scary moments of her interactions under the weight of the illness but I think I would have liked to know more about Kate, the impact on n her parents marriage, on her friendships, etc. Unfortunately, I also struggled with the authors narration. It was almost too detached. I realize it must have been a very painful story to recount and perhaps should have therefore been left to a third party. Overall, she is not without talent and should continue to write but perhaps learn how to tighten the story up a bit.

Literally the worst book I have ever listened to. Took me 2 months to get through it. I kept thinking it had to get better because nothing could be that bad. From the horrible, morose, monotone narration to the pointless, self serving, story I literally wanted to puncture my own eardrums. I can't believe anyone could enjoy this. Emma Roberts, who I thought would do a fine job, speaks in one slow monotonous voice through the entire book. I think the author meant to keep you guessing but I figured out the story in the first couple of hours and only hung in there with the hopes of being proven wrong...I wasn't. I never wanted a central character to get killed off as much as I did Joan...spoiler alert... she doesn't! Don't waste a minute on this book. Too many good ones out there.

For a novella, the story was actually quite entertaining. Not at all scary but interesting nonetheless. There was one major story line issue that was very distracting. It's clear that Stephen King never spent much time with a nine year old girl and didn't do much research. it would have been perfectly fine if he had just made her 12 instead of nine. The thoughts and vocabulary he gives the main character is just far too advanced for a nine year old. If he had set her up as some sort of wunderkind, maybe, but just a normal nine year old, no way. I found myself saying, "come on" way too many times. Otherwise, it was good.

I had to give it 4 stars because the writing is good and it kept me interested but my God, cut this woman a break. Just when you think nothing worse can happen to her, it does. I just wanted one nice thing to happen. The story was depressing from the moment it started til the last minute. The author says, "I guess that's my thing" but it would have been nice to have a few moments of lasting joy.
