Historia
Ryan Fleming is a young agnostic reeling from his brother’s death. Though he is deeply angry with God, he makes good on a promise he made to his brother in the final moments of his life: to visit a church at least once. But shortly after his arrival, the slick megachurch’s shoddily installed video projector falls on his head—sending Ryan through a wormhole into another world. To make it back to his own universe, he must partner with a woman named Faith to awaken a long-sleeping King—the World-Maker who can make all things new.

Fun update to the classic
Revisado: 06-10-22
Postmodern Pilgrim’s Progress updates the classic in a way that’s accessible to younger (in age or faith) readers without seeming trite to someone with a collection of religious books and studies. Far from a stodgy allegorical trudge, the humor of the authors comes through clearly but doesn’t blunt the hard truths.

Engaging plot with weighty message
Revisado: 07-23-20
The central character relies on her Christian faith to confront a series of dangerous and disturbing events. Though the fictional plot points of real-world problems — greed, exploitation, trafficking, etc. — are tragic, the overall message is of hope and redemption.

Historia
Marie-Laure lives with her father in Paris near the Museum of Natural History, where he works as the master of its thousands of locks. When she is six, Marie-Laure goes blind and her father builds a perfect miniature of their neighborhood so she can memorize it by touch and navigate her way home. When she is 12, the Nazis occupy Paris and father and daughter flee to the walled citadel of Saint-Malo, where Marie-Laure’s reclusive great-uncle lives in a tall house by the sea. With them they carry what might be the museum’s most valuable and dangerous jewel.

Sadly beautiful
Revisado: 05-20-15
Doerr tells a story of WW2 without pandering or preaching. Appelman's performance captures each lovely, terrible character wonderfully.
