Historia
2016 Pulitzer Prize-winning memoirist of Barbarian Days William Finnegan had devoted his days to chasing waves as a lifelong surfer. When his adolescent daughter, Mollie, proves to be a natural-born climber, Finnegan follows his newfound passion toward rock climbing. It’s an arduous apprenticeship, and it turns the parent-child dynamic on its head, as Mollie slips into the role of coach and mentor, while her father has to push his limits to keep pace.

And then?
Revisado: 01-24-20
I listened for about an hour and wondered where the actual story was, beyond the obvious. I get that Mollie was inspiring. I enjoyed hearing about her journey into the sport. My own daughter discovered climbing this year, so it wasn't that I didn't have an interest in the topic. I just felt like I was sitting on a couch listening to someone talk about how proud they were about their kid, for an hour. When that happens in real life, after a while, you want to talk about something else, and I thought the story might go someplace else, but since it didn't seem to be going anywhere, I stopped listening.

Historia
For David Goggins, childhood was a nightmare--poverty, prejudice, and physical abuse colored his days and haunted his nights. But through self-discipline, mental toughness, and hard work, Goggins transformed himself from a depressed, overweight young man with no future into a US Armed Forces icon and one of the world's top endurance athletes. The only man in history to complete elite training as a Navy SEAL, Army Ranger, and Air Force tactical air controller, he went on to set records in numerous endurance events.

Awe-inspiring on one level
Revisado: 01-11-20
I was inspired by David's story. Given his childhood, I was so happy for him. However I couldn't help but wonder "so what?" on some level, at times, because, to me, personal success is only a small part of happiness in life. If you have all that success but don't have deep connections with people outside your family, what good is it, in my mind. I had hoped to hear David also reflect as deeply and introspectively about his personal life and relationships or at least touch on it near the end. Does he have a loving life partner? I know he's a loner, but he's still a human being. There isn't even a Personal Life section on his Wikipedia page, and that made me a little sad. Maybe that's his next life chapter. I feel certain that if given the same level of commitment and reflection, that part of his life, too, could be inspiring.

Historia
The golden skies, the translucent twilight, the white nights all hold the promise of youth, of love, of eternal renewal. The war has not yet touched this city of fallen grandeur or the lives of two sisters, Tatiana and Dasha Metanova, who share a single room in a cramped apartment with their brother and parents. Their world is turned upside down when Hitler's armies attack Russia and begin their unstoppable blitz to Leningrad.

Get a Room
Revisado: 07-02-19
I really liked this book. That said, I felt a bit like a voyeur during parts of it. Very steamy in a good way if you like that kind of thing in a book. I just felt like it went on forever (like more than an hour of listening time, more than was necessary. Excellent plot, though, and the narrator was fantastic.

Historia
A small Georgia town erupts in panic when a young college professor is found brutally mutilated in the local diner. But it's only when town pediatrician and coroner Sara Linton does the autopsy that the full extent of the killer's twisted work becomes clear. Sara's ex-husband, Police Chief Jeffrey Tolliver, leads the investigation - a trail of terror that grows increasingly macabre when another local woman is found crucified a few days later.

Good, creepy, Intriguing
Revisado: 06-19-19
If you can ignore a handful of unrealistic plot points, this is a great book. I wish the narrator wouldn't pronounce every "what" word with a /hw/ sound, but she's pretty darned good otherwise and makes up for the unrealistic parts.

Historia
An only child, Deborah Burns grew up in prim 1950s America in the shadow of her beautiful, unconventional, rule-breaking mother Dorothy, a red-haired beauty who looked like Rita Hayworth and skirted norms with a style and flare that made her the darling of men and women alike. Married to the son of a renowned Italian family with ties to the underworld, Dorothy fervently eschewed motherhood and domesticity, turning Deborah over to her spinster aunts to raise while she was the star of a vibrant social life.

Some deal breakers for me
Revisado: 03-17-19
To be honest, I liked the book (narrators were great, and I liked the steamy part in the beginning!) until I got to some parts of the plot that were just dumb to me. For example, I would expect a woman who's going to lose her virginity to a stranger in a sex trade (one for whom this behavior would generally be out of character) to have more feelings about it. I felt like that aspect of the character was underdeveloped, but I kept listening. But then I got to another part that just didn't seem realistic to me. What person (a doctor, no less) would hand their cell phone over to a stranger to borrow and come back hours later to retrieve it? That's where I called it quits. If you're an analytical person, you might not like this book. If you're a go-with-the-flow type and don't need realism, I recommend it.

Historia
Born to survivalists in the mountains of Idaho, Tara Westover was seventeen the first time she set foot in a classroom. Her family was so isolated from mainstream society that there was no one to ensure the children received an education, and no one to intervene when one of Tara’s older brothers became violent. When another brother got himself into college, Tara decided to try a new kind of life. Her quest for knowledge transformed her, taking her over oceans and across continents, to Harvard and to Cambridge University.

Poignant and Inspiring
Revisado: 06-03-18
I wish I could hang out with Tara Westover for a while. I could relate so much, not to the type of trauma she suffered in her childhood, but to the ways her trauma affected her, the way it distorted her thinking and her future relationships as a result. Tara writes with honesty and clarity that I admired. I was moved by her story. As a sister myself, I couldn't help but notice the absence of stories about Tara and her sister Audrey's childhood together, but the absence itself spoke volumes to me (one of nine siblings who simply survived individually, not as teammates or partners in a tough childhood). When you live with childhood experiences like those Tara shares, it's sometimes every man for himself. Thank you, Tara, for sharing your inspiring story. I'm happy for you.

Historia
An estimated 13 million students in the United States have dyslexia, a neurologic disorder that impairs reading. Many dyslexics struggle and fail. Some, however, go on to achieve wild success. How? In this true story, dyslexic high school student Aidan Colvin asks them. Over the course of one year, he writes 100 letters to successful dyslexics. He doesn't expect anyone to write back, and is genuinely surprised when people do. This book features letters from writer John Irving, Arctic explorer Ann Bancroft, surgeon and CEO Delos Cosgrove, and others.

Great Story
Revisado: 12-28-17
I love that Aidan took the initiative to send the letters, and I’ll be reading this book to my students. That said, I wish I had known at the outset that (spoiler alert) he received fewer than 10 responses to his 100 letters. That bummed me out, realizing that the story was over and I wasn’t going to hear any more responses. Maybe there’ll be a sequel.
