Historia
Richard Blanco's childhood and adolescence were experienced between two imaginary worlds: his parents' nostalgic world of 1950s Cuba and his imagined America, the country he saw on reruns of The Brady Bunch and Leave it to Beaver—an "exotic" life he yearned for as much as he yearned to see "la patria." A prismatic and lyrical narrative rich with the colors, sounds, smells, and textures of Miami, Richard Blanco's personal narrative is a resonant account of how he discovered his authentic self and ultimately, a deeper understanding of what it means to be American.

Great work by Blanco
Revisado: 07-25-24
This memoir by Richard Blanco is wonderful and it tells the story of a renowned who grew up trying to reconcile his post-exile identity with being a Miami Cuban in America. Great story, very authentic.

Historia
Raised in Miami and the daughter of Cuban refugees, Crucet examines the political and personal contours of American identity and the physical places where those contours find themselves smashed: be it a rodeo town in Nebraska, a university campus in upstate New York, or Disney World in Florida. Crucet illuminates how she came to see her exclusion from aspects of the theoretical American Dream, despite her family's attempts to fit in with white American culture - beginning with their ill-fated plan to name her after the winner of the Miss America pageant.

Well written, but atypical leftist pandering
Revisado: 07-25-24
The narration wasn't bad, and the writing wasn't bad, but it's a very atypical far-left liberal pandering story that you would expect from someone in academia who built their career off playing the oppressed victim.

Historia
A natural storyteller and raconteur in his own right - just listen to Paddle Your Own Canoe and Gumption - actor, comedian, carpenter, and all-around manly man Nick Offerman (Parks and Recreation) brings his distinctive baritone and a fine-tuned comic versatility to Twain's writing. In a knockout performance, he doesn't so much as read Twain's words as he does rejoice in them, delighting in the hijinks of Tom - whom he lovingly refers to as a "great scam artist" and "true American hero".

Classic Twain
Revisado: 01-05-24
Novels like Tom and Huck are what Twain used to leave his mark as one of the great American authors of all time. Although this book isn't as critically acclaimed as Huckleberry Finn, it's still a superb novel for both adolescent and adult readers alike.

Atwood's vision of 1984
Revisado: 01-03-24
When I read this book, I see it as Atwood's rendition of 1984, where most of the same themes are present and the general premise of an authoritarian critique is shared. This is an excellent novel, but it's not the best Atwood dystopian work in her library, that would go to Oryx and Crake. 4 stars for the story as it's great but not the greatest, 5 for the production.

Historia
Set in the mountains of southern Appalachia, Demon Copperhead is the story of a boy born to a teenaged single mother in a single-wide trailer, with no assets beyond his dead father’s good looks and copper-colored hair, a caustic wit, and a fierce talent for survival. Relayed in his own unsparing voice, Demon braves the modern perils of foster care, child labor, derelict schools, athletic success, addiction, disastrous loves, and crushing losses.

Beautiful Story
Revisado: 01-01-24
Kingsolver set the bar pretty high by framing this book as some modern version of Dickens' Copperfield. Those are difficult shoes to fill, but I think this book does really well in being much closer to home with many of our own experiences of abject poverty and drug addiction in our communities. As someone with proud Appalachian roots, I appreciated the representation and the thorough and well told story. It does drag on perhaps a little long, but that doesn't take away from the content. Beautifully written & great production as well.

Awe and exhilaration—along with heartbreak and mordant wit—abound in Lolita, which tells the story of the aging Humbert Humbert's obsession for the nymphet Dolores Haze. Lolita is also the story of a hypercivilized European colliding with the cheerful barbarism of postwar America.

As intense and riveting as it is repulsive
Revisado: 12-23-23
As stated in the headline, the actual content and story line of this book is stomach-turning, and there will always be a certain number of readers who are so turned off by such a plot that it makes it impossible for them to read. With that being said, Nabokov demonstrates fascinating prose, showing himself to be a wordsmith like so few others in history can manage to do. Additionally, superb job by the narrator in this production.

George Orwell depicts a gray, totalitarian world dominated by Big Brother and its vast network of agents, including the Thought Police - a world in which news is manufactured according to the authorities' will and people live tepid lives by rote. Winston Smith, a hero with no heroic qualities, longs only for truth and decency. But living in a social system in which privacy does not exist and where those with unorthodox ideas are brainwashed or put to death, he knows there is no hope for him.

Dark, but necessary
Revisado: 12-21-23
I think everyone should be required to read this book at some point during their life time. I think it's a little dark for elementary, middle, high school, but young adults at least should read it. Simon Prebble also deserves his flowers for a wonderful performance. This is the second narration I've read by him and he is consistently amazing. Great story and very well done presentation.

Historia
One of the most revered works in English literature, Great Expectations traces the coming of age of a young orphan, Pip, from a boy of shallow aspirations into a man of maturity. From the chilling opening confrontation with an escaped convict to the grand but eerily disheveled estate of bitter old Miss Havisham, all is not what it seems in Dickens’ dark tale of false illusions and thwarted desire.

Marvelous work by the Narrator
Revisado: 12-20-23
Great Expectations is, rightfully, regarded as some of Dickens' finest work of his life. Simon Prebble does a particularly exceptional bringing this book to life as well. The Old English dialect can be at times tedious and annoying to read for those of us used to more modern English, but that doesn't take away from the quality of the story.
