Hoped I was going to be getting dragon riders of perm/ McCaffrey or maybe Tolkien or Honir Harrington on. Instead it was more hunger games ( though main characters are more honorable) or Guild Hunters ( nalini Singh) with sex and arial battles towards the end. was ok… just a bit immature and violent. Hoping next book goes more into the world development that started in the last 1/3 rd of book 1.

Good but needs your full attention

Great characters as always but kept getting lost in the exposition. this is a better book to listen to while doing gardening or chores than driving or falling asleep. Needs longer periods of time paying attention than I seem to have these days at bedtime or that I can devote while in traffic. :)

Excellent story

A little cruel for 8th grade but not unlike a wrinkle in time which I read at that age. Very old recording , sounded like they digitized a worn out cassette tape from the distortions in it from time to time. For an adult I’d want to hear what happens in the next book, the story was only on act two to me. Listened to it because I learned it was on banned books lists.

Overall 4 because… Bears :)

Gotta love any story with a bear :). The romance is touching. The hero or heroine certain they are mad and about to lose control is at this point very formulaic.. I’d like to see more like silver mercant, or memory. Who discover and develop and master their abilities. but over all still a lovely love story.

Book is good. New cover art in black is creepy

New cover art on the series with men’s faces on black is creepy, cold and totally off putting. You can’t tell one book in series from another. The nooks are romances about court, often focused on the woman, but all just men on every book. I can see why a publisher would want to rebrand or refresh a series, but these are lazy, creepy, anti-branding. They represent Nothing about the books.

Severe sexual violence

Story is good but long abuse arc that culminates in sadomasochistic sex attack, then written off as dream sequence, then still used as shadow over main character was WAY to graphic and grotesque and ruined the book. Loved Bovas books for years, and yes abusive men will test a sex worker as described, but it was just too graphic and ruined story for me.

End of this Series for Me

I should have stopped right here with this book. But no, I go on and read the next one thinking this was a one off. I ended up returning the next book in the series. Take a look at the reviews for the next book in the series and the next book it’s all the same. The series is all filler after this. Stats making the book twice as long as it should have been and loss of any character development. It’s nothing but a description of a battle that’s happening at the moment followed by lots of prompts. There’s no growth in the characters anymore other than the moment after someone nearly dies. After this book characters also get frenzied and are separated so no companionship or counseling each other or laughing with each other.I don’t understand what happened to the author or to the editors, but I’m done.

Abuse and insta-lust at beginning are too much for my taste

A bad combination in this book. The abuse is not severe and the recovery from it is handled realistically except the insta-list that draws the main characters to get her in a way that in itself feels abusive at first. The performance is good and there are many tender moments but....
I only listened through to the end in order to fill in gaps In sub plots I thought I had missed by skipping this book the first time I listed to the series. I could have skipped it all together.

Starts slow but pulls you in

At first I thought... more harlequin romance version of jane yellowrock... heroine acted too young for her age of 28 and her abilities too Mary Sue miraculous. As the book went on it improved and characters started to deepen. It’s lightweight, but im looking forward to reading the next in the series to see how it develops

Every adult in this book is dummer than a hat pin. Everyone is confused, and/or suspicious, driven by regret, yearning or some weird anger. Not a single likable character, or laugh, or bit of romance in this.
