The ABC Murders:

An atypical but more gripping Poirot mystery.

The seasoned Christie reader is familiar with the her usual style of murder mystery. Poirot finds himself in a confined place, be that a small village, a sprawling country manor, a riverboat, or a stalled train; where he is surrounded by a host of varyingly suspicious characters. He and his partner(s), in this book it is Captain Hastings, then go about meticulously studying the crime scene, the setting, and the persons involved until he eventually cracks the mystery, generally with some magnificent twist which none but the most shrewd and creative readers could have seen coming.

The A.B.C. Murders takes a different approach. This time, Poirot is challenged by a mysterious figure, in classic homicidal maniac fashion. A letter arrives warning Poirot of a time and place he should be aware of. Shortly thereafter, a murder occurs in that place at that time. This kicks off a chase across all of England where Poirot is not privy to any possible suspects or motives, only the few clues that the murderer leaves behind.

This novel does not read like your typical Poirot mystery, but it is certainly well worth your time. I have said in previous reviews, I rate mysteries based on how fun/easy they are to read and get immersed in, and how hard the mystery is to solve. If I feel I have used all my exhaustible brain power, "little grey cells" as Poirot might say, and have not come to the correct conclusion, then I am satisfied. No one likes a mystery they can solve halfway through the book.

No worries about that here, ABC Murders will have you gripped until the very end.

Great read, awesome twist. True rating: 8.8/10.

The Mysterious Affair at Styles:

The original Hercule Poirot novel, a classic murder mystery whodunit with a shocking ending.

This story is great because it introduces the reader to the ever relatable Captain Hastings and the enigmatic and brilliant Detective Poirot. We follow a seemingly run of the mill murder where a wealthy elderly matriarch is killed on the same night as she is writing a new will. What follows is a detective story which can feel basic but keeps on slightly altering your guesses up to the end.

How stupid I was. I thought I had this one figured out about halfway through, and near the end I thought my guesses were being confirmed. Then, the Queen of Mystery turned a complete 180 on me in the end and I love her for it.

To me, what constitutes a great mystery is if I can put full effort and brain power into trying to solve the mystery presented and at the end I am still utterly shocked. Which is all Agatha Christie does.

Not a Typical Poirot Mystery

While Three Act Tragedy is a good mystery book, all Agatha Christie novels are, it wasn't at all what I expected as it was labelled a Poirot mystery. Yes, Poirot eventually solves the case, but he is absent for a large majority of the book. He makes a brief appearance at the start, then largely disappears as we follow the book specific characters as they try and fill his place as detective.

While this is an interesting idea, I found the lack of Poirot to be distracting and confusing. Rather than trying to focus on the plot and its various developments, I kept coming back to this idea of Poirot's absence. As silly as it may sound, without him there directing me along, alla a naive Hastings, I did not know what I could believe. This, coupled with an expansive and spread out cast of characters, by the end of the story, I was thoroughly confused, and not in the good way. I did not have enough time with any of the characters, outside of the main three, to confidently remember their names, forget piecing together alibis or assigning guilt in my head.

Perhaps it is my own simplemindedness, but I feel a good mystery should allow its readers to easily become acquainted with the cast of suspects so as to allow the reader to better try and solve the mystery his or herself.

The twist at the end was very interesting and I definitely can see how, if I had been following the plot better and was more engaged in solving the murder, I would be shocked. Instead, I was left scratching my head about how I could've possibly picked up on it.

All in all, a decent mystery with a good twist, if you read it more closely than I, you will likely enjoy it more.

Two Great Books for One Credit

Agatha Christie is the Queen of Mystery for a reason, both of these novels are masterpieces of thrilling detective work and will keep you on the edge of your seat the whole ride.

The world famous "Murder on the Orient Express" finds our detective Poirot stranded in a strange country on a luxury liner where he must pour through alibis, backstories, and evidence to find the murderer among the passengers. One of, if not the greatest murder mystery ever written, this novel is spectacular and is worthy of all its praise.

The lesser known paring, "The Murder on the Links" is wonderful in its own right too. Contrasting with the eerie setting of the Orient Express and its methodical, slower paced detective work, "The Murder on the Links" is a wild ride of a mystery told from the point of view of Poirot's dear friend who is just as hopelessly lost as the reader. Whereas the Orient Express will have readers utterly perplexed until the very end, this novel will have you absolutely sure of the murderer on more than a handful of occasions just to still shock you in the end.

An excellent use of a credit and one of the best value options in the Audible library.

A fitting end to one of the best series I have ever read. If you've made it this far, I don't need to convince you of the masterwork Pierce Brown has created here but if you're a prospective new series reader looking to make sure the ending doesn't disappoint: fear not.

Brown wraps up his initial arc perfectly, all story lines you care about meet an end, and the groundwork is laid for plotlines in the sequel books. You can feel perfectly comfortable stopping here, though Brown will likely leave you wanting more of his characters and world.

One of the best trilogies I have ever read. 9.7/10.

This is the Prose Edda by Snori modernized for today's audience to enjoy. A collection of short stories about all your favorite Norse gods and the hijinks they get into.

Do not be fooled though, Avengers fans won't find a Loki and Thor they're familiar with in this read. This is based off the original material after all, and though humor and silliness is present, it may be in the form of unrecognizable characters for Marvel fans. Though, fans of the recent God of War entries will resonate with this easily.

An easier to understand masterpiece fit for scholars and and casual readers alike. 8.8/10

Having read Between Two Fires and loving it, I assumed this novella would strike the same chord for me but for some reason I just didn't jive with this one as much. I don't know if it's because it felt rushed or the lack of intriguing characters (in my humble opinion), but this one just did not click with me.

Regardless, I recognize that most people who enjoyed Between Two Fires also really enjoyed this one, and the brevity of it means that even if you don't love it, you aren't sacrificing much time.

Worth a shot for medieval horror enjoyers; 6/10.

Too often, a grand war is the centerpiece of fantasy and science fiction epics. Hyperion is a masterclass of how creative and enjoyable a sci-fi novel can be without being wrapped up in galaxy wide conflict.

While the book continuously hints to some impending war between the Hegemony of Man and some sort of half human alien species of outcasts called the Ousters, the story of our characters really is not centered around the war at all. Each character you are introduced to will tell her or her gripping tale as to why he or she was chosen for the pilgrimage to the Shrike and all are quality literature.

The only reason this scores a 4/5 for me is because the fifth story of the book didn't land as well for me as the others did and I was bored at times.

Regardless my true rating is an 8.5/10. 100% worth a read.

Langan spins a great tale about men coping with loss through the outlet of fishing. Which takes readers on a ride sometimes leaving them forgetting where they began.

The book is categorized as horror but I would say it’s more eerie/spooky. There isn’t really a fear factor so much as an uncomfortable feeling in your stomach as you read. I thoroughly enjoyed this one as a fisherman myself, though, frankly anyone will appreciate this narrative regardless of angling experience.

A worthwhile addition to any September/October TBR. 7.9/10
