So Good!
Revisado: 05-16-24
Dr. Ballard has always been an inspirational figure in my life and this book really hammers home why he still is. This book is a quick overview of all his adventures, but it’s masterfully done.

Historia
In this original and meticulously researched narrative history, the author of the “stunning” (The Sunday Times) Young and Damned and Fair uses the sinking of the Titanic as a prism through which to examine the end of the Edwardian era and the seismic shift modernity brought to the Anglo-American world.

Best Version Yet
Revisado: 04-16-24
As a lifelong Titanic nerd, this was by far the best description of the night’s events I’ve ever read. Harrowing and horrifying, it really made you feel like you were there. Tying the fate of Titanic to the excess of the Edwardian era was also a stroke of genius in my book, as it all definitely ties together.

Historia
Peter Aykroyd spent his childhood watching his family’s parlor séances through the crack of a basement door. Here, for the first time, Aykroyd tells the strange and delightful story that inspired his son, Dan, to make the mega-hit Ghostbusters. Part history, part family legend, A History of Ghosts starts in 1848 in upstate New York, where the spiritualist craze first began....

Great, With a Bummer Ending
Revisado: 04-02-24
The vast majority of this book is an almost academic look at the history of mediumship and spiritual investigations at the turn of the 20th century. Great stuff. But literally the last five minutes almost completely ruined this book for me because after all of the great historical writing, it ends with a bunch of nonsense about Jesus and the Christian afterlife being real. What a buzzkill.

Historia
It was one of the most searing images of the twentieth century: two young boys, two princes, walking behind their mother’s coffin as the world watched in sorrow—and horror. As Princess Diana was laid to rest, billions wondered what Prince William and Prince Harry must be thinking and feeling—and how their lives would play out from that point on.

Great Personal Memoir
Revisado: 01-19-23
I urge listeners to push past deciding like this is a “feel sorry for me” story from a very rich, very privileged young man, because the core message in-between the seemingly random set of stories here is that our worldwide media machine is not built to work for the public good. It’s a money making behemoth and god help anyone, rich or poor, who lands within their gaze when coverage of them can make a buck. Spare is a fantastic warning of why being constantly in the spotlight is never a good thing, despite what the majority of media outlets would have you believe with their constant “reality tv” productions and magazine coverage.

Some of the Best Fantasy Out There
Revisado: 05-28-21
This is hands-down my second favorite fantasy trilogy after The Lord of the Rings. The world, characters, and writing are amazing. I have some issue with some of the things left unanswered at the ending of this series, but overall it’s just fantastic.
My biggest complaint is shared with many here. The reader was changed after the first book and I feel that tonally they don’t fit. I would have loved to see more consistency with that.

Historia
Kell is one of the last Travelers - magicians with a rare, coveted ability to travel between parallel universes. As such, he can choose where he lands. There's Grey London, dirty and boring, without any magic, ruled by a mad King George. Then there's Red London, where life and magic are revered, and the Maresh Dynasty presides over a flourishing empire. There's White London, ruled by whoever has murdered their way to the throne. And once upon a time, there was Black London...but no one speaks of that now.

Just brilliant! I finished this in just a few days and I’m excited to pick up the second one. The narration was fantastic as well. Definitely a good purchase.

Historia
Four months have passed since the shadow stone fell into Kell's possession. Four months since his path crossed with Delilah Bard. Four months since Rhy was wounded and the Dane twins fell, and the stone was cast with Holland's dying body through the rift, and into Black London. In many ways, things have almost returned to normal, though Rhy is more sober, and Kell is now plagued by his guilt.

Great, But...
Revisado: 04-02-20
I love this series and I’m having a great time listening to it on Audible, but having just finished “A Darker Shade of Magic” before picking this up, I can’t help but be disappointed that they changed the narrator between books one and two. The first one was fantastic and it’s really throwing me off now that it’s changed, so if that is a determining factor for you, buyer beware.
