Historia
This is a love story like no other: Elinor Powell was an African-American nurse in the US military during World War II; Frederick Albert was a soldier in Hitler’s army, captured by the Allies and shipped to a prisoner-of-war camp in the Arizona desert. Like most other black nurses, Eleanor pulled a second-class assignment, in a dusty, sun-baked - and segregated - Western town. Brought together by unlikely circumstances and racist assumptions, Elinor and Frederick should have been bitter enemies; but instead, at the height of World War II, they fell in love.

Good Story Told In an Underwhelming Way
Revisado: 11-17-20
I thought the overall story idea was a cool one. Black woman in love with German soldier during WWII. I liked the part about them meeting and getting together, but that only encompasses a small part of the book. Most of it goes into detail about where they come from and what their communities and families were like. I wanted to know more about the relationship itself. I gave up after a few chapters. Maybe it gets better, but I didn't have the patience for it.

Predictable Story, Annoying Voices for Most Charac
Revisado: 05-29-20
Story is predictable from about chapter two and onward. Cop falls for formerly abused woman, but, oh she can’t trust again...I’ll let you fill in the blanks.
The voice of Carter is annoying, imo. He sounds “slow”and his sisters have grating voices, too.

The legendary love story and the major motion picture starring Clint Eastwood and Meryl Streep. This is the story of Robert Kincaid, the photographer and free spirit searching for the covered bridges of Madison County, and Francesca Johnson, the farm wife waiting for fulfillment of a girlhood dream. It shows readers what it is to love and be loved so intensely that life is never the same again.

The Readers’ Performances Are Slightly Better Than the Story
Revisado: 04-16-20
Hate how the story tries so hard to make itself romantic. Why can’t it just be two people connecting, falling in love, and then having great sex? Instead, the we don’t get any deep conversations between the two of them, but we do get plenty of details about what the book believes is the best sex in the history of sex. The mother even leaves a boastful letter to her children about how great the adulterous sex was, including a list of places where they f*cked in the house. Unbelievable.
Kincaid is a narcissist. He actually says sh*t like, “I am the last cowboy,” and “I am the peregrine.” I half-expected him to say, “I am God.”
The movie was heaps better.

Good Story Overall
Revisado: 04-04-20
Very good story overall, though I don’t favor the writer’s style. I prefer books with more descriptions of the characters and setting. I listened to this after watching the first five episodes of the Hulu series. That mini series is one example of a TV adaptation that is, in my opinion, better than the book.

Vapid, Silly
Revisado: 10-15-19
I bought her audiobook, The Saturday Evening Girls Club a few months ago. That book had some sophomoric writing, but the one saving grace is that the female characters wanted to do more than just become wives and mothers. One wanted to pursue higher education. The narrator wanted to open her own business. That book, for me, was about a 2 out of 5. I rate Beantown Girls even lower. In this book, three female friends volunteer to work overseas to support the war effort during WWII, which is a good premise. However, I couldn't get past the first few chapters. They arrive in Europe and immediately hang out at a bar and begin to flirt with guys they think are cute. I hope the book gets better from there, but it wasn't too promising. This book reads like YA. Yes, I like a bit of romance in a story, but I'd also like to read more about strong women who also pursue careers and have other things going for them besides just flirting with cute guys. Don't like the generic/cliché descriptions either. Hate when writers rely on standard old things like how blue a person's eyes are. Shows a lack of imagination, in my opinion. I don't know where it ends because I didn't finish it, but I'd be willing to bet money that the narrator meets another man over there and then finds out her original boyfriend isn't dead after all.

Historia
Jeannette Walls grew up with parents whose ideals and stubborn nonconformity were both their curse and their salvation. Rex and Rose Mary Walls had four children. In the beginning, they lived like nomads, moving among Southwest desert towns, camping in the mountains. Rex was a charismatic, brilliant man who, when sober, captured his children's imagination. Rose Mary painted and wrote and couldn't stand the responsibility of providing for her family; she called herself an "excitement addict."

Entertaining Story
Revisado: 08-04-19
So many parts of the story are memorable, though it’s been over a year since I heard it. Walls’ voice can be a little grating, but not bad enough to distract too much. I taught this in a literature class last year, and though it’s hard to get a bunch of non-English majors excited about reading, this book was the most popular of the books we read.

Historia
In 2004, in a stunning upset against the two-time defending champion Serena Williams, 17-year-old Maria Sharapova won Wimbledon, becoming an overnight sensation. Out of virtual anonymity, she launched herself onto the international stage. "Maria Mania" was born. Sharapova became a name and face recognizable worldwide. Her success would last: she went on to hold the number-one WTA ranking multiple times, to win four more Grand Slam tournaments, and to become one of the highest-grossing female athletes in the world.

Conceit and Victim Mentality
Revisado: 06-18-19
Maria and her father got kicked out of Bolittieri’s and Maria blames Kournikova’s mother. She even blames her doping on a witch hunt of Eastern European tennis players at the hands of the ITF. Her ex-boyfriend couldn’t handle her being more wealthy and famous than him, so she had to get rid of him. Got to wonder how all the folks she threw under the bus felt after reading this.
Nothing is Sharapova’s fault in here. The only thing she takes responsibility for is winning. She provides a drawn-out narrative of her sole Wimbledon triumph, while being sure to remind us she was “only” a girl (never mind that she was bigger and stronger than most of the other players).
Yes, I’m sure playing Serena is intimidating as Maria said, but all the stuff about Serena being so big while Sharapova was already 6’2” herself when they first played was annoying to me. Also hate her silly excuse for losing to Serena for over a decade: “Serena beat me for hearing her cry.” Uhm, no. Serena beat you because she’s a fierce competitor who wouldn’t share the limelight with anyone, especially one she learned to easily dispatch.
Strange that Sharapova kept referring to her father as Yuri. Yes, that’s his name, but you’d think she’d mostly call him dad or daddy, since that’s what he is to her.
Sharapova has a good speaking voice, but at times her reading of the story sounded awkward, like she was being forced to read aloud by an elementary school teacher.
Overall, this a a good coming to America story and can be inspirational in that it reminds us to reach for our dreams. Just wish the heroine would display a bit more humility and honesty.
