Outstanding
Revisado: 04-19-25
This book is a treat for anyone who has loved Little Women, though it could easily be read on it's own. Marmee's story intersects often with the events of the novel, but the focus is on her own experiences, and they stand on their own.
As a character, Marmee is wonderful, but to me she has always seemed like an ideal- not perfect, but reasonably close (the author's note touched on the reason for this). This story gives a picture of her own worries and struggles, making her far more real and relatable while in no way tarnishing the familiar, beloved character.
One of my favorite aspects of the story was her unfolding relationship with the Hummels. In the original novel they were more of a faceless poor family receiving help (and I don't say that as a critique, as the March girls' interaction with them was limited). In this novel, they live and breathe as people, not just a generic charity case.
The narration was outstanding, capturing the full range of emotion beautifully.
*I'm not usually one to give trigger warnings but it's worth noting that this book has repeated and heavy themes of miscarriage, stillbirth, and child loss.

Encouraging and practical
Revisado: 03-25-25
An excellent mix of spiritual vision casting, big picture principals, and practical ideas. Also very relatable, as I appreciated the author's willingness to share his own parenting lows. It is encouraging and full of grace rather than burdensome.
It's worth noting that at the time of writing this book, the author's kids were young, so it's more like hearing from someone who's in the trenches with you and has given very careful thought to what they are doing and why, rather than someone decades ahead or a "child rearing expert." To me, that's not a negative, and I greatly appreciated his insights and relatability.

So full of fun details!
Revisado: 03-24-25
I love stepping back into the world of Harry Potter, and since I'm not quite ready for another reread of the series, this book was a fun way to revisit it. A mix of various aspects of the wizarding world explained, character backstories, fun anecdotes that never made it in the books, and a peek behind the curtain at how JK Rowling arrived at some of her ideas. The level of detail in the world she created is amazing, and so very fun. I would recommend it to anyone who enjoys the series and/or is confident they've found a hole in the world building. 😜
The narration was good too, one star removed because I found the sound effects irritating, but not so much that it kept me from enjoying it.

Captivating
Revisado: 03-17-25
Simply put, everything about this book is beautiful. Anything I've tried to write beyond that just doesn't seem to capture what, to me, was captivating. Amanda Dykes truly has a gift.
No complaints about the narration either, very well done.

Christian fiction at its finest
Revisado: 03-01-25
Ever since reading Of Love and Treason last year, I've been eagerly anticipating this book, and it did not disappoint. As Sure as the Sea is Christian historical fiction at its finest. The characters felt real, and I found myself caught up in their stories and struggles. The story is rich in deep truths, (not preaching or platitudes) that flow naturally from the events and the characters.
And it is beautiful. Absolutely beautiful. I cannot recommend this book highly enough. Though it's only March, I anticipate that by the time we reach December this will still be one of my favorite books of the year.
The narration was also very well done. This is an intense book, and she really brought the characters to life.

Wonderful!
Revisado: 02-15-25
I have enjoyed every book in this series, and this one may have been my favorite. Thematically, I really loved the contrast between the moralism of the prohibition era (and the impact on those growing up under that pressure) with the beauty of grace freely given to even the worst of sinners who turn to the Lord. Without giving any spoilers, I also appreciated how those who did have a heavy focus on rule keeping and maintaining an image were portrayed not as terrible hypocrites, but as people who also truly loved the Lord and had a heart for people. So often we like clear lines, we want to categorize people as good or bad, and life is simply not that tidy. There was a lot of grace woven throughout this novel.
As far as the story goes, it held my attention start to finish. Having a protagonist who did not know anything about her time crossing was an interesting twist, and I loved the way Caroline grew through the course of the story. And I think the hero in this one was my favorite out of all 4 books... but I won't spoil anything by giving away his identity!

Pulled me in instantly!
Revisado: 02-05-25
I'm enjoying this series so much. Each book has pulled me in instantly and kept me engaged the whole time, and with each new character Gabrielle Meyer explores different possibilities for the time crossing concept.
I really liked switching between Grace and Hope's perspectives, and I felt very invested in both characters. I also appreciated the way the Salem witch trials were handled- not an easy topic, and seeing how Grace and Hope processed their 17th century realty with their 20th century perspectives was interesting.
The narration is also top notch.
For historical fiction with an excellent twist, I recommend this series wholeheartedly.

A beautiful story of redemption
Revisado: 10-31-24
I had a hard time reading the beginning, not because it wasn't well written (it was) but because Matthew was absolutely infuriating. I had a general guess as to where the story would go, and figured I'd be glad that I persevered. I was right on both points.
For starters, things took a turn for the better earlier than I was expecting, so that was a relief. And though one could guess the general direction of the plot, the intricacy of the way things unfolded and the way the characters grew was really beautiful. There was nothing cliche about it. This was a story of redemption in the lives of TWO people, and a very satisfying one... except for my one complaint- there should have been an epilogue.
Regarding the audiobook, the narrator was good but the editing was sloppy. It would abruptly cut ahead, sounding like something got cut out or cut short. That happened around 10 times, at least. Even so, it was still worth listening.

Deep and heartfelt, believable characters
Revisado: 10-07-24
Really excellent. Deep characters making believable choices, and a climax that had me on the edge of my seat (at least figuratively!) I really felt for the characters, and while at times their choices frustrated me (a lot) I always understood WHY they were making those choices. I also appreciated how the growing faith of the characters felt very natural to the story rather than forced.
Just be aware, this story does have very frequent descriptions of desire and intimacy within marriage. Not graphic or steamy in the slightest, but personally, I wouldn't have wanted to read this one before I was married, because the longing husband and wife to be intimate with each other is a repeated theme within the context of the story.
As far as the audiobook goes, my only complaint is that there was never a pause or anything else to indicate when the scene changed, and it was jarring to be listening and then suddenly have the story shift to a completely different day or even character perspective. The narrator was great though.

Excellent characters and narration, incomplete ending
Revisado: 09-24-24
I truly enjoyed this book. Both Daniel and especially Elizabeth had flaws that were noticeable and believable, yet I found myself rooting for them. That is a hard balance to find in writing Christian romance! The narration was outstanding, and the narrator brought the story to life with excellent emotion and inflection. I only removed a star because there was one central plot introduced at the very beginning and continued throughout that was left hanging at the end. It was something that drove the entire story, and whenever we're told what decision was made. it seems there is a second book in this series with a different protagonist, so maybe this plot point is addressed then, but it was a major element of THIS book that would certainly have been resolved by the time of the epilogue, and an answer would have been appreciated!
