Historia
On the world called Hyperion, beyond the law of the Hegemony of Man, there waits the creature called the Shrike. There are those who worship it. There are those who fear it. And there are those who have vowed to destroy it. In the Valley of the Time Tombs, where huge, brooding structures move backward through time, the Shrike waits for them all.

Frankly, pretty mid.

The narrator was good but the book was pretty boring. Some interesting ideas, but not terribly compelling.

Historia
Paul Bäumer is just 19 years old when he and his classmates enlist. They are Germany’s Iron Youth who enter the war with high ideals and leave it disillusioned or dead. As Paul struggles with the realities of the man he has become, and the world to which he must return, he is led like a ghost of his former self into the war’s final hours. All Quiet is one of the greatest war novels of all time, an eloquent expression of the futility, hopelessness and irreparable losses of war.

Fantastic book. Very much in the vein of Frankenstein, the Time Machine, Lovecraft, the invisible man, etc, early sci-fi. Not in terms of the story so much as the general feel of it. I really enjoyed this book and wish more of his work was translated. Great reader too.

Historia
Telluria is set in the future, when a devastating holy war between Europe and Islam has succeeded in returning the world to the torpor and disorganization of the Middle Ages. Europe, China, and Russia have all broken up. The people of the world now live in an array of little nations that are like puzzle pieces, each cultivating its own ideology or identity, a neo-feudal world of fads and feuds, in which no one power dominates.

it's irritating that this shows up on so many lists of the best Soviet sci-fi because it wasn't written during the Soviet period and is pretty thoroughly anti Soviet. I don't know exactly what the author is about but he does go on at length about it. The reader is good though. As for the author... I wouldn't waste your time.

Truly one of the best sci-fi novels ever written. The reader is good too. This is one of Lem's finest works, and that's saying a lot because the bar is high.

Historia
World War Three wiped out the humankind. The planet is empty now. Huge cities became dust and ashes. Railroads are being eaten by rust. Abandoned satellites hang lonely in their orbits. Radio is mute on all frequencies. The only survivors of the last war were those who made it into the gates of the Metro, the subway system of Moscow city. It's there, hundreds of feet below the ground, in the vaults of what was constructed as the world's largest air-raid shelter, where now people try to outlive the end of days.

the reader was great but both is book and the one before it are pretty much full to the brim with tepid rambling and flaccid political navel gazing. The fun monsters are gone, never to return, everything is just a boring introspective endless rambling. Boring. Don't bother.

Historia
Yefremov is frequently ridiculed for his enthusiasm and faith in the viability of a communist society, as described in his best known science-fiction novel Andromeda Nebula. What is frequently overlooked is Yefremov's tremendous knowledge of history and profound understanding of psychology. His future society, while highly evolved, is not impervious to mistakes. His future humanity, having learned and discovered much, is not pausing to rest on its laurels - it continues to learn and explore.

Excellent work of utopian socialist speculative fiction. The baseless capitalist cope at the end is annoying but otherwise it's a great book. Dunno why the translator felt the need to make stuff up. It's not like the USSR is around anymore. Anti soviet propaganda nonsense just seems ridiculous at this point. Capitalists are so insecure. Anyway, the book itself is really interesting and odd. It changes modes a couple times and fleshes out a really interesting view of a full communist far future. Really good. If you like this book, you may enjoy the pc game Atomic Heart. I noticed they have a number of Yefremov's ideas incorporated into the game!
