Historia
Often called the greatest novel ever written, War and Peace is at once an epic of the Napoleonic wars, a philosophical study, and a celebration of the Russian spirit. Tolstoy's genius is clearly seen in the multitude of characters in this massive chronicle, all of them fully realized and equally memorable.

Good book
Revisado: 09-10-21
War and Peace is a masterpiece, but I don’t ever want to listen to another book narrated by Frederick Davidson.

Inspired by the work of Psychologist Erich Fromm, who asserted that the fear of freedom propels anxiety-ridden people into authoritarian settings, Blumenthal explains in a compelling narrative how a culture of personal crises has defined the radical right, transforming the Republican party for the next generation and setting the stage for the future of American politics.

Informative, but biased
Revisado: 05-16-21
DNF—Author Blumenthal provides some interesting information, but his obvious bias against those on the political right mars the book. Even worse, he clearly does not agree with the Christian faith, the Bible, or evangelicals. He cherry picks ills within the Republican Party and the Christian Right to make his case. As a Christian seeking to understand what has happened in the party I supported for 40 years, I learned some things but not the answers I sought. Blume that seems to be the left wing equivalent of Fox News—extremely biased.

Excellent
Revisado: 05-08-21
An excellent history of submarine warfare in the Pacific during WW2. The narrator was very good, with the exception of repeatedly mispronouncing the word “boatswain,” pronouncing it “ boat swain” at least 100 times rather than “bos-n.”

Hardy's first major literary success, here brought to life by narrator Nathaniel Parker, is the story of the independent and spirited Bathsheba Everdene, who inherits her uncle's farm, the largest estate in the area. She surprises the villagers of Weatherbury by deciding to run it herself. Attracted to this bold young woman are three suitors all vying for her affections. They include the lonely gentleman-farmer Boldwood, the young and handsome but inconsiderate Sergeant Troy and the faithful shepherd Gabriel Oak.

A better book than expected based on reviews. The narrator does a good job with the exception of the female voices.

Historia
Emma can be enjoyed as a charming love story, a detective story, and a comic and lively picture of English life 200 years ago. Austen's beautiful, clever, wilful but fallible heroine Emma Woodhouse believes she knows best. Perfectly content with her life she sees no need for either love or marriage, yet nothing pleases her more than meddling in the romantic lives of others.

A Good Story
Revisado: 03-18-21
Emma is a good book, but not as good as “Pride and Prejudice.” Audible appears to have fixed the chapter issues mentioned in other reviews. I liked the narrator’s voice, but she does not differentiate the voices quite sufficiently.

Historia
The Brothers Karamazov tells the stirring tale of four brothers: the pleasure-seeking, impatient Dmitri; the brilliant and morose Ivan; the gentle, loving, and honest Alyosha; and the illegitimate Smerdyakov: shy, silent, and cruel. The four unite in the murder of one of literature's most despicable characters - their father. This was Dostoevsky's final and best work.

An Important Work of Literature
Revisado: 03-06-21
The works of Dostoevsky have been widely hailed as great literature, but they can be a challenge for many Western readers. Russian literature is usually complex, and this work certainly is that. Marred somewhat by the narrator’s voice.

Robert E. Lee, one of the most famous figures in American history, vanished after his dramatic surrender at Appomattox. In fact, he lived only another five years, during which time he did more than any other American to heal the wounds between North and South during the tempestuous postwar period.

Interesting account of Lee’s final years
Revisado: 02-17-21
I found the book interesting but not unusually good. The narration was not at all good. Michael Anthony’s voice had an annoying quality that makes one wonder why he would be chosen to read any book.
