This is a striking addition to the body of Culture lore, and adds definition and scale to the previous works by using the Earth of 1977 as contrast. The stories in the collection range from science fiction to horror, dark-coated fantasy to morality tale. All bear the indefinable stamp of Iain Banks's staggering talent.

most of the first half of the book is lackluster and unrewarding to sit through.

This style of writing does not seem to be a strength of the author.
Additionally the authors attempt to explore the Culture from the perspective of modern Earth is unfulfilling.
I recommend skipping most of the first half of the book.
I'm only halfway through the book, I am unsure if you should also skip the second half.

hard to follow the performance of the previous guy. But this guy can't even be bothered to pronounce main characters names correctly.
