I miss Jennifer Ikeda's narration

The narrator of this book didn't have the range of voices that I grew accustomed to in the previous books by Deborah Harkness. Marcus and Matthrew sounded just alike and sometimes even Phoebe sounded like them. Ysabeau lost a lot of her personality and most foreign and regional accents were missing. The narrator's pronunciation of French words sounded pretty good to my non-French speaking ear. Would have loved to have heard it read by Jennifer Ikeda

I enjoyed the well constructed plot and the sense that this could have been real. The performance was great with a variety of accents that helped you know who was speaking and a gossipy tone. I was sorry when I finished the book because I could have happily continued to eaves drop on this world.

At first I thought the reader was some sort of automated recording. He read the book in almost a monotone. He could make a racy book dull.

I am also not sure how interesting the material would be if read by someone else. There are few examples or stories to make the concepts relatable.

I kept stopping this book and listening to something else only to pick it up again because I wondered how it would end. I stopped it when I got tired of the accounts of battles with monsters. The book reminded me of the way action takes place in gaming with special abilities used to battle monsters in order to gain points or treasure and make it to the next area or section of play. This in and of itself is not bad. It is just that the main character sounded like he was reporting the events without really being involved in them. The author has the main character mention several times that he is not very social, avoids people a lot and doesn't pick up on social cues very well. It made me wonder if it wasn't the author that was socially backwards and so wrote his main character that way. It made it hard to relate to the characters and to really visualize the scenery.
I am not sure whether I will pick up the sequel or not. Perhaps the author will hit his stride in the next book.

What did you like best about Critical Thinking? What did you like least?

This book had a point and tried to make it but never got past vague generalisations. It was like waiting for the actual book to start the whole time I was listening.

What could Katelyn Williams have done to make this a more enjoyable book for you?

Perhaps if the author could have given examples to make the concepts more relateable.

Which scene was your favorite?

not applicable

Do you think Critical Thinking needs a follow-up book? Why or why not?

no thanks

Any additional comments?

did not bother to return the book since I listened to the whole thing.

Lean and Meaty

If you could sum up Your First 1000 Copies in three words, what would they be?

This book is lean because the author does not endlessly repeat platitudes and give vague words of advice. Many audio books on promoting the sale of new books sound like they are selling themselves instead of giving concrete actionable advice. They are fluffed out to book length when the net information contained in them could be stated in a single paragraph.
This book is meaty because it is full of concise factual advice laid out in a logical manner. The author outlines the tools and plans that the reader can put into action immediately. He also tells the reader what actions would not be worth their time.

What other book might you compare Your First 1000 Copies to and why?

This question applies more to works of fiction.

Which character – as performed by Tim Grahl – was your favorite?

Tim Grahl narrated his own book which works well because he understands his own material better than a hired narrator.

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

This question may apply more to fiction.

Any additional comments?

I have ordered the paperback version of this book to use as a reference copy.

What disappointed you about Viral?

This was a one page idea fluffed out into a short book. It is made up of generalizations and platitudes.

What was most disappointing about R. L. Adams’s story?

He could have given concrete instructions but there were only brief ideas.

Who would you have cast as narrator instead of Bill Fike?

I don't know who to suggest.

What reaction did this book spark in you? Anger, sadness, disappointment?

Disappointment

Any additional comments?

I have to admit that I did not read any reviews before buying this book.
