Teen Romance for Insecure Girl Who Discovers Magic

This book wasn’t for you, but who do you think might enjoy it more?

People who enjoyed Twilight? The focus here is on the romance, the fantastical setting is secondary. If you feel like you could relate to a girl who is secretly special, who is insecure in her looks and feels like that could ruin her dating hopes/chances, or you have a secret crush on your childhood best friend, this book might work well for you.

What was most disappointing about Leigh Bardugo’s story?

I felt frustration that she was focusing on her crush over someone seemly disinterested in her, and I felt a lot more optimistic when she looked at other romantic options. I also got really angry that for the first quarter of the book, all the female characters are snide or viewed as competition. Even when the main character makes a female "friend" it seems like a very superficial relationship which I struggled to characterize as a real friendship. The main character constantly seems to focus on a sense that she isn't beautiful enough and that the beautiful people get all the things. There is character growth, but it doesn't feel like she grows much as a person.

What reaction did this book spark in you? Anger, sadness, disappointment?

This book disappointed me. I like to read interesting magical frameworks with interesting plots. The magical system was thought out, but the focus of the book is the romance and it was a very cliche approach to romance. Basically, main character figures out she has magic and it causes some political responses, but she goes to learn magic and then has to decide which romance/world she wants. There are other complications, but everything is around the main romantic forces in her life or to emphasize her importance in the story.

Political Intrigue and Magic

I thought the narration was excellent; it really added to the world of the book by making characters so distinct.

The world itself is also fun; the culture has an emphasis on water, and everything related back to a belief in the fountain (where the series gets it's name).

Owen is the central figure. A young boy that is sent to the king as a hostage, but has a strongly sympathetic effect on much of the household, he slowly learns subtle skills to help him survive. The central question is whether all the help and knowledge he obtains will be enough.

My only reservation was how one character is called fat/unhealthy repeatedly as an insult. The character isn't evil and is more than just that representation, so it was something I could get past, but it was there.

I'm very excited to hear book two!

Steampunk Styled City

This one was a lot of fun. The narration was great, and the story was imaginative. The setting seemed rather steampunk - living "bone" cities and a culture based on flying. The main character has strong family ties and a passion for flying. (Flying is the main mode of transportation, and the basis of most trades.) This was a well written world, and definitely has a lot of political drama - sometimes a bit hard to listen to, since it's not a overly fair society. But the story is well told - and I highly recommend it!

Excellent characters and storytelling

Best thing I've listened to in a long while. The story was interesting with wonderful world building; the characters were realistic and the main characters enthralling. The narrator had a flexible and pleasant voice that made for easy listening and the writing was very poetic. Highly recommended!

Funny and Fun

I love the sound of Dan Savage's voice; I've enjoyed listening to him since I went through the This American Life archives, so I love picking up the audible books that he narrates.

I delayed listening to The Kid because I wasn't certain how relevant it would seem today. Other than a few minor references that make it clear that this story wasn't written yesterday (mostly references to where LGBT rights are, or how living in Seattle was then) this story is deeply touching. It's about trying to make a family, how people relate to each other and define their roles, and of course, Dan Savage being himself. A very sweet, funny, and touching story. Highly recommended!
