These books are a brilliant examination of tolerance, otherness, mental illness/the misunderstood, the brutality that follows when a society is ruled by fear, and the redemption that can come when those horrors are finally brought to the light.

The world is complex, a palimpsest itself, and this third book in the series does beautiful justice to tying the threads pulled thus far while leaving room for still more knots.

Highly recommend.

Very enjoyable

I sincerely enjoyed this sequel. There were several passages that were so beautiful I had to rewind them many times just to take them in. If slow to start, the novel finishes well and the depth of emotional complexity to be found here is worth the long listen.

Amazing reader

This story is very intriguing and complex; I found myself lost in it. But what really held my attention was the spectacular performance of the reader. Her tonal changes, clarity of character, and ease between accents and dialects made this an absolute joy to listen to.

So I’m wrecked forever now

I listened to this in one sitting. Literally staying up all night and I feel dead inside now. It is a very, very good book, but I am ruined. The ending was not enough of an upper for me to let go of the heartbreak...but that’s life sometimes. I’m going to go stare at the wall for several hours now, excuse me.

Amazing

This book is as good as Circe, in my opinion. It is a beautifully told coming of age story of lovers ultimately torn apart by war. It is fantastic.

There are a lot of reviews about not liking the romance aspect of the story, but in my opinion, if you don’t suffer from homophobia, you’ll see how brilliant this interpretation of the Achilles myth is.

Great book, bad performer

This book was one of my favorites as a teenager and I was so excited to find it on here, but this narrator was so so difficult to listen to. I found the tone and inflections of her voice very irritating and her vocal choices made Macy into WAY more of a brat than I had ever read her as. This is an unfortunate example of a narrator detracting from an otherwise wonderful story.
