Historia
The definitive biography of Edward Gorey, the eccentric master of macabre nonsense. From The Gashlycrumb Tinies to The Doubtful Guest, Edward Gorey's wickedly funny and deliciously sinister little books have influenced our culture in innumerable ways, from the works of Tim Burton and Neil Gaiman to Lemony Snicket. Some even call him the Grandfather of Goth. An eccentric, a gregarious recluse, an enigmatic auteur of whimsically morbid masterpieces, yes - but who was the real Edward Gorey behind the Oscar Wildean pose?

I now feel as though I knew him as well as anyone.

Truly illuminating. Having admitted his illustrations since the late 90's I finally visited the Edward Gorey House on Cape Cod and immediately needed to learn all I could about the man. This book was wonderful in its ::ahem:: illustration of the man so unique and yet so human. I enjoyed this work immensely!

Historia
The adventures of Julie's wolves continue as a new wolf leader takes over the pack. The black alpha Kapu, whom Julie once nursed back to health, is a natural leader. Kapu is strong and wise, but if his pack is to survive, he must lead it through many dangers: near starvation, rabies, rival wolves, and worst of all, humans. The wolves share a strong sense of community, including a deep love of pups, and an understanding of the ancient ways necessary to their survival.

Historia
When Miyax walks out onto the frozen Alaskan tundra, she hopes she is leaving problems at home far behind. Raised in the ancient Eskimo ways, Miyax knows how to take care of herself. But as bitter Arctic winds efface the surface of food, she begins to fear for her life, and turns to a pack of wild wolves for help. Amaroq, the leader of the pack, eventually accepts Miyax as one of his own defenseless cubs, protecting her from danger and saving portions of the daily kill for her.

More complex and relevant than I remembered...
Revisado: 12-28-22
I read this book 35 years ago and adored it. But I couldn't remember the story or why I loved it, so I wanted to read it again before giving a copy to my 10 year old daughter. I truly enjoyed the nuanced telling of a young Inipaq girl caught between her culture and its systemic assimilation and her personal journey navigating the overlapping world's she was a part of. It felt good to revisit this old friend.

Historia
In the United States, teenagers can focus on one task for only sixty-five seconds at a time, and office workers average only three minutes. Like so many of us, Johann Hari was finding that constantly switching from device to device and tab to tab was a diminishing and depressing way to live. He tried all sorts of self-help solutions—even abandoning his phone for three months—but nothing seemed to work. So Hari went on an epic journey across the world to interview the leading experts on human attention—and he discovered that everything we think we know about this crisis is wrong.

The best book I've read in years!
Revisado: 03-27-22
This is perhaps the most impactful, well researched, well written, well balanced and thoughtfully presented pieces of social study I've read in many years. I cannot recommend this book enough. It's about more than you think. It challenged some of my ideas and validated others. All the while presenting evidential research with contextual analysis from a world perspective. I'll read the rest of this authors works!
