Historia
In August of 1588, a Spanish fleet of 130 ships departed from La Coruña under the command of the Duke of Medina Sidonia. Its purpose was to rendezvous with the Spanish army at the Dutch port of Sluys. At this point, the fleet was to act as a screen while the Spanish army was shuttled across the English Channel in barges. But there was one problem: the English fleet. Though much smaller than the Spanish fleet, it was a demonstrably superior fighting force of sailors, ships, naval technology, and guns.

Great Narration of another Historical Accounting
Revisado: 08-18-24
A wonderful narration of the Naval wars of Queen Elizabeth of England, The Faerie Queen, and King Phillip 2nd of Spain, The Prudent. A seemingly unbiased take on the era and engagements. Very fair historical accounting.

Historia
This classic war memoir, first published in 1920, is based on the author's extensive diaries describing hard combat experienced on the Western Front during World War I. It has been greatly admired by people as diverse as Bertolt Brecht and Andre Gide, and from every part of the political spectrum. Hypnotic, thrilling, and magnificent, The Storm of Steel is perhaps the most fascinating description of modern warfare ever written.

An orchestrated tragedy.
Revisado: 07-29-24
A very wonderful but tragic telling of a pointless war. A fruitless and absolutely insane tragedy of human history. The writer explicitly interweaves that point into this retelling between his honor and sense of duty. A pointless and fruitless war, indeed. A war that this reader believes was orchestrated by the powers that shouldn’t be to “cull the herd”. There are books and white papers where think tanks and councils literally make such suggestions. If only the writer had known. If only the people had known. They could have directed all that misplaced honor and duty at the true culprits and evildoers of humanity. The ruling elite, the aristocracy, the plutocracy, the oligarchy. Those un-voted for puppet masters of our politicians who turn us all a blind eye. Those who see us as expendable and pieces on a chess board. Devils in human skin. But, honestly, would it matter? As long as everyone has their bread and circuses (sportsball). Why bother to pick up a book or dive through history and writings of the “elite”? Better to let the History channel tell you the “truth” and our public schools that graduate illiterates with honors.

Historia
Millions of people have thrilled to the adventure of young Jim Hawkins and Long John Silver since the publication of Treasure Island in 1883. It has been dramatized countless times since its appearance. Treasure maps marked with an X, schooners, the Black Spot, tropical islands, and peglegged sailors with parrots on their shoulders: All these stereotypes of the buccaneer tale were the invention of R. L. Stevenson. But make no mistake about it...this novel is a masterpiece of plot development, character study, and sheer writing skill.

Historia
Historians universally agree that Thucydides was the greatest historian who has ever lived, and that his story of the Peloponnesian conflict is a marvel of forensic science and fine literature. That such a triumph of intellectual accomplishment was created at the end of the fifth century B.C. in Greece is, perhaps, not so surprising, given the number of original geniuses we find in that period. But that such an historical work would also be simultaneously acknowledged as a work of great literature and a penetrating ethical evaluation of humanity is one of the miracles of ancient history.

Charlton Griffin, one of the best narrators to love, in my opinion. Wonderful tale of the Peloponnesian War. However, as much as I enjoyed it. I would possibly recommend not having a lot going on in the background as you listen. As it’s pretty in-depth and you’ll get lost quickly with all the changing of names and locations, if you’re not paying rapt attention. I hope you enjoy it as much as I did.

Historia
Initially, the Thirty Years War was precipitated in 1618 by religious conflicts between Protestants and Catholics in the Holy Roman Empire. But the conflict soon spread beyond religion to encompass the internal politics and balance of power within the Empire, and then later to the other European powers. By the end, it became simply a dynastic struggle between Bourbon France and Habsburg Spain. And almost all of it was fought out in Germany. Entire regions were depopulated and destroyed.

Great but exhaustive
Revisado: 01-30-24
Charlton Griffin one of the best narrators reads to you an expansive and at times overwhelming record of the Thirty Years War. You will learn much but you will also, probably, get overwhelmed with the numerous Kings, Princes, Generals, Field Marshals, Higher Nobility and their machinations. Regardless. I give it five stars.

Revisado: 12-01-23
While a rather good walk through of the life of Louie 14th. The reader will be lost without understanding the history of the time. With that knowledge acquired beforehand. It makes for a more graspable listen. Listen or read a book or two on “The Thirty Years War” before giving this one a go. As always, superbly narrated by Charlton Griffon.

Historia
This magnificent novel is about the murder of a miserly, aged pawnbroker and her younger sister by a radical, destitute St. Petersburg student named Raskolnikov, and the emotional, mental, and physical effects that follow. It is a remarkable masterpiece about a man's turbulent inner life and his relationship to others and to society at large. Dostoevsky explored the human condition on many levels in this great piece, and among the main themes the novel explores is the rather strange theory that criminals have a spiritual need to be punished - that indeed they demand it.
