Historia
“I’m sorry but the answer’s no.” Reluctant author, Anthony Horowitz, has had enough. He tells ex-detective Daniel Hawthorne that after three books he’s splitting and their deal is over. The truth is that Anthony has other things on his mind. His new play, a thriller called Mindgame, is about to open at the Vaudeville Theater in London’s West End. Not surprisingly, Hawthorne declines a ticket to the opening night. The play is panned by the critics. In particular, Sunday Times critic Margaret Throsby gives it a savage review, focusing particularly on the writing.

A fun read
Revisado: 11-28-22
I enjoyed the book very much, but I couldn’t help comparing it with the previous Hawthorne novels, and I have to say this would be my least favorite. However, it still beats the pants off of most of the other stuff that’s out there, in terms of his cleverness and lack of overt violence.

As children, the three siblings—Harrison, Lewyn, and Sally—feel no strong familial bond and cannot wait to go their separate ways, even as their father becomes more distanced and their mother more desperate. When the triplets leave for college, Johanna, faced with being truly alone, makes the decision to have a fourth child.

Unique story, unexpected twists
Revisado: 07-29-22
I realized 30 minutes into the book that i would be sorry when it ended. The writing was what really wowed me. The clever turns of phrase, the voices of the characters so real. After a while I found myself adopting their speech mannerisms. I kept expecting to find a villain among them, but instead I was encouraged to grow more compassionate. I don't want to ruin anything, so I will steer clear of more information. My only regret is that the final few chapters seemed a little thrown together compared to the rest of the well-crafted book I had been listening to for about 15 hours. But still, better than most of what passes for entertainment.

Baby Boomer's Delight!!!
Revisado: 12-03-21
Sometimes Brilliant exceeded my expectations on so many levels. I was inspired, educated and captivated by the story of Dr. Larry Brilliant. It was bittersweet because it reminded me of the high hopes I had for myself and my generation, coming of age in the 60s and 70s. We all thought we were going to change the world. And some people actually did! Dr. Brilliant, had the willingness to jump in and tenaciously follow their dreams. Not a trouble-free life, but a life deeply lived. I was sad when the book was over because I felt great whenever I listened to it.

In a time of social and ecological crisis, what can we as individuals do to make the world a better place? This inspirational and thought-provoking book serves as an empowering antidote to the cynicism, frustration, paralysis, and overwhelm so many of us are feeling, replacing it with a grounding reminder of what’s true: we are all connected, and our small, personal choices bear unsuspected transformational power.

This book was my life!
Revisado: 04-20-21
During the time period that I was reading this book, my life shifted in the direction I’ve always wanted to go. 90+ percent of this book contain truths that I rarely heard voiced. And when I heard charles eisenstein voice them, I felt validated and the things I care about or brought into sharp relief. Now that the book has been finished, I am wondering how I will keep up that same level of engagement and connection with the universe that was both inside me and outside me.

Historia
With research and insight, Charles Eisenstein details how the quantification of the natural world leads to a lack of integration and our “fight” mentality. With an entire chapter unpacking the climate change denier’s point of view, he advocates for expanding our exclusive focus on carbon emissions to see the broader picture beyond our short-sighted and incomplete approach. This refocusing away from impending catastrophe and our inevitable doom cultivates meaningful emotional and psychological connections and provides real, actionable steps to caring for the Earth.

down to earth help
Revisado: 09-30-19
After listening diligently to the Mel Robbins book, I think that I’ve internalized the main take-away : ask yourself what’s your biggest fear, tune-in to how the fear expresses itself in your body, notice the pattern of behavior that follows, and make incremental adjustments to begin shifting the pattern and opening new possibilities for being in the world. I like the way she’s assimilated the big ideas of the science of trauma into her coaching. She’s kind and insightful, while still being oriented towards action. The steps she suggests are all very do-able. And I like her honesty about the limits of the tools she offers--sometimes therapy has to be step #1/

worth the effort
Revisado: 07-28-19
This book has changed (and maybe saved) my life. It may even help to save the planet. As a long-time environmentalist and health/fitness specialist, I have seen every fad come and go over the past 50 years. This book presents all of the hard science you need (and more) to get the big picture. We are degrading the planet and releasing carbon into the atmosphere by the same mechanism that is destroying our health. A problem in the gut biome (read the book if you want to know what that means) results not only in a touchy tummy, but overall collapse of immune system health. If you don't have a strong science background, just skip through the difficult sections. Dr. Montgomery connects the most important dots!

Great character evolution
Revisado: 07-29-18
The span of years (1920's-1970's) covered many transformations with some characters more fleshed out than others. If the era, subject, and British background are of interest the book is more than fulfilling. The John Lee narration, offers a splendid bonus.
