Quality true crime book
Revisado: 07-14-23
Well written, paced and researched. Does a creditable job tying the lead characters’ actions to broader belief trends while not pretending to nail down their exact mental states. The by-the-author reading is straightforward and skillful.

A major new biography of the Civil War general and American president, by the author of the New York Times bestseller A. Lincoln. The dramatic story of one of America's greatest and most misunderstood military leaders and presidents, this is a major new interpretation of Ulysses S. Grant. Based on seven years of research with primary documents, some of them never tapped before, this is destined to become the Grant biography of our times.

Eye opening
Revisado: 04-25-21
When I grew up in a border state many years ago, Grant was presented as an overall mediocre person and drunken slob who had a random talent for military tactics and was callous as to how many died under his command. I was skeptical of this as I got older since it seemed to me somebody like that would have dropped out of sight after the war. This book shows him as someone with
a unique constellation of talents and qualities (combined with some significant flaws and blind spots) that make him a lasting figure.
The book showed me many things I had not known about American life in the 1840s and 50s, a period that has always interpreted me.it is also informative on Gilded Age politics.
Overall, a very good “life and times” of a misunderstood person. The voice performance excellent. The narrator’s voice is well matched to the material and he brings just the appropriate level of color and emotion to the reading.

Historia
In the 1950s, a young Indianapolis minister named Jim Jones preached a curious blend of the gospel and Marxism. His congregation was racially mixed, and he was a leader in the early civil rights movement. Eventually, Jones moved his church, Peoples Temple, to northern California, where he got involved in electoral politics and became a prominent Bay Area leader. But underneath the surface lurked a terrible darkness.

Not for everyone, but if you like P.G. Wodehouse, period pieces, low key but sharp humor, give this a try. The performance is excellent.

Low key but interesting history lesson
Revisado: 05-09-15
A well researched and clearly told story that brings to light some interesting characters and snapshots of specific aspects of social and business history. Good level of detail without getting bogged down. Not a good choice if you want a white knuckle adrenaline trip, just a series of related stories connected ably.

Historia
For more than 500 years, the story of Joan of Arc has been an inspiration and a mystery. The least likely of heroines, a peasant girl with no education and no prospects, Joan turned herself into the legendary Maid of Orleans, knight, martyr, and saint. Following a voice she knew was God's, she led an army to victory in battle and crowned the king of France, only to be captured by her English enemies and burned at the stake as a heretic, all by the age of 19.

Reader needs pronunciation coach
Revisado: 03-22-05
I enjoyed the book, which is of good quality in both content and style, but was really appalled at how consistently the reader mispronounced the name of every person, place and thing not in modern English.
