Historia
Sam and Sadie—two college friends, often in love, but never lovers—become creative partners in a dazzling and intricately imagined world of video game design, where success brings them fame, joy, tragedy, duplicity, and, ultimately, a kind of immortality. It is a love story, but not one you have heard before.

Revisado: 03-05-23
Brilliant. My new favorite book. This will be a classic some day. It should have won every reward and been selected for every best of list. Critics consistently choose obtuse books over the ones that reach our hearts with magnificent artistry. Tomorrow and Tomorrow and Tomorrow tells the love story of friendship, a tale desperately needing to be told in our lonely times.

Historia
The natural limits of the human body make us vulnerable and therefore dependent, throughout our lives, on others. Yet American law and policy disregard these stubborn facts, with statutes and judicial decisions that presume people to be autonomous, defined by their capacity to choose. As legal scholar O. Carter Snead points out, this individualistic ideology captures important truths about human freedom, but it also means that we have no obligations to each other unless we actively, voluntarily embrace them.

Screed
Revisado: 11-27-22
I was hoping by reading this, I would be given a deeper understanding of the ethical considerations of law related to abortion. However, I was surprised when the author departed from moral reasoning and made a leap to ideology. Upon discovering that the author is a professor at Notre Dame and a friend of Amy Coney Bryant, his use of embodiment to reify the relationship between embryo and uterus as “mother and child” made sense.

My new favorite author
Revisado: 12-23-19
I am now on my way to read everything John Boyne has written.
With deep empathy and compassion, Boyne tells a story that addresses child abuse and the complicity of the Catholic church in Ireland. He does this without turning it into abuse porn as some novels have done. The Catholic church’s self-serving denial and enabling during the 1980s serves as a model for understanding how the Republican party in the United States today allows a misogynistic abuser and criminal to remain in the White House.

Not enough stars
Revisado: 08-31-19
This was a powerful, emotionally nuanced novel. The narrator captured the tone and emotional depth with remarkable range. I would listen to almost anything narrated by Molly. Hopefully audible will use her more often as a narrator.
As for Marybeth Keane, I can’t wait for her next release and will be reading Fever soon. She is a truly magnificent writer.

Historia
The Goldfinch is a haunted odyssey through present-day America and a drama of enthralling force and acuity. It begins with a boy. Theo Decker, a 13-year-old New Yorker, miraculously survives an accident that kills his mother. Abandoned by his father, Theo is taken in by the family of a wealthy friend. Bewildered by his strange new home on Park Avenue, disturbed by schoolmates who don't know how to talk to him, and tormented above all by his unbearable longing for his mother, he clings to one thing that reminds him of her: a small, mysteriously captivating painting that ultimately draws Theo into the underworld of art.

Perfection
Revisado: 02-01-14
David Pittu's narration brings a remarkable book to life. Great story with fascinating characters. David Pittu's voices were perfect. I was especially delighted by his portrayal of Russian Boris. I did not want the story to end and kept rewinding the last chapter just to savor the story a bit longer before I listened to the last sentence. Often I listened to the story and reread it on my kindle. I loved this book. There are not enough stars to convey my favorable rating. Perhaps David Pittu could be hired to narrate the Secret History for Audible!

Good idea but just did not work
Revisado: 12-24-12
It was a clever idea to use a young voice to perform this audiobook. But it just did not carry the story for all of those hours of listening. The story may be much better read, however. I will give that a try later.

Does not hold a candle to Hemingway
Revisado: 09-18-12
I loved "A Moveable Feast" Hemingway's reflection on this time in Paris with his first wife. Unfortunately this revisionist story lacked a feeling of authenticity. I imagined Hadley having much more depth than this fictionalized version portrays. The story just did not work for me.

This is a fascinating story set in the Amazon, reminiscent of Heart of Darkness with a modern scientific, corporate twist. The language and narration are beautiful. I highly recommend.
