Historia
One of the 20th century's most challenging novels of ideas, The Fountainhead champions the cause of individualism through the story of a gifted young architect who defies the tyranny of conventional public opinion. The struggle for personal integrity in a world that values conformity above creativity is powerfully illustrated through three characters: Howard Roarke, a genius; Gail Wynand, a newspaper mogul and self-made millionaire; and Dominique Francon, a devastating beauty.

Surprisingly relevant in the 21st Century!
Revisado: 10-13-20
While this novel deeply and iconoclastically shatters some of the tenets of novel-writing, it’s surprising how of the novel relates to our current era. Long! I recommend the audible version for long drives. Rather astonishing, really.

Historia
Leon Uris retums to the land of his acclaimed best-seller Exodus for an epic story of hate and love, vengeance and forgiveness. The Middle East is the powerful setting for this sweeping tale of a land where revenge is sacred and hatred noble. Where an Arab ruler tries to save his people from destruction but cannot save them from themselves. When violence spreads like a plague across the lands of Palestine - this is the time of The Haj.

Difficult to listen to such a moving yet dreadful and predictive tale
Revisado: 09-11-18
This novel about a Moslem Palestinian family was written decades ago by Leon Uris, an American Jewish author. As a result I’m not sure what is realistic and what isn’t. The Islamic Palestinian world depicted by Mr. Uris is sexist, crude, rapacious, brutal, and ugly. Is it accurate? I don’t know. While it’s gripping to hear the ongoing saga, it’s also emotionally draining because the characters keep making disastrous choices motivated by hate and avarice. And yet recently, when I was blessed with a chance to sit down with an Islamic political refugee, he expressed opinions similar if not identical to those expressed by fictional characters in this novel. Therefore I remain unsure. Towards the end, the book contains a few astonishing dire predictions which have been now been proven accurate by history. To what degree this very moving tale is otherwise realistic, I cannot say.

Historia
Almost all accounts of D-Day are told from the Allied perspective, with the emphasis on how German resistance was overcome on June 6, 1944. But what was it like to be a German soldier in the bunkers and gun emplacements of the Normandy coast, facing the onslaught of the mightiest seaborne invasion in history? What motivated the German defenders, what were their thought processes - and how did they fight from one strong point to another, among the dunes and fields, on that first cataclysmic day?

Surprising insights into D-Day combat
Revisado: 08-17-18
This rare small book is universally applicable to modern combat. It’s worth reading (or on my case listening) by anyone who is in military combat arms, or who aspires to be in combat arms, to fully comprehend the carnage and randomness of warfare.

Historia
This riveting debut set in 1534 England secured C. J. Sansom’s place “among the most distinguished of modern historical novelists” (P. D. James). When Henry VIII’s emissary is beheaded at an English monastery, hunchbacked lawyer Matthew Shardlake is dispatched to solve the crime. But as he uncovers a cesspool of sin, three more murders occur - and Matthew may be the next target.

The full emotional impact of the dissolution of the English monastic system.
Revisado: 10-25-17
While this work of fiction is ostensibly a murder mystery, its fullest impact for me was its deep and broad depiction of the deceitful corruption of the government of Henry VIII and the dissolution of the English monastic system, with its catastrophic effects on normal English life. Within these pages I was able to witness the cultural frustrations which led to the later English Revolution and American Revolution. To read of the tyranny under which my ancestors the English people lived is to realize that life in the 21st Century is blessed and rare.

Historia
A thrilling story of espionage, daring, and deception set in the exotic landscape of occupied Manila during World War II. On January 2, 1942, Japanese troops marched into Manila unopposed by US forces. Manila was a strategic port, a romantic American outpost, and a jewel of a city. Tokyo saw its conquest of the Philippines as the key in its plan to control all of Asia, including Australia.

What a gift for those of us who have heard stories of the Filipino Resistance in World War 2 but can't find the whole story! This research cuts to the core of how Americans and Filipinos tried to cope with the Japanese invasion of 1941-1942. I purchased the Audible version and it made the hours fly past!
