Kept me guessing
Revisado: 02-05-24
I bought this in the Audible series sale and thought it sounded like a fun way to pass a few hours. I enjoyed it so much more than I expected. I liked all three Dahlias, Posy and Caro especially as their insecurities seem more hard fought. Rosalind is growing on me. I'm also a sucker for inter-generational friendships and I feel these are growing believably. The mystery was twisty enough and I didn't get there much before our detectives. Immediately downloaded the second in the series. Jilly Bond did a good job, although she possibly was the victim of bad editing in a couple of places where Posy's name changed randomly. Overall highly enjoyable.

Historia
Sara Parcell disappeared without a trace on a crisp April morning in Frederick, Maryland. Her tragic story was a national obsession and the centerpiece of a controversial television docuseries that followed her disappearance in real time. But is it possible that everyone missed the biggest secret of all?

This format worked so well on audio. Voice actors for the detective and the show producer in particular were excellent. I thought the story unfolded well and a couple of the twists caught me out. Not getting into plot details because there’s too much risk of spoilers, but absolutely recommend this for anyone who likes true crime and occasionally questions their own voyeurism. Thanks to the author, cast and crew! I really enjoyed Kill Show.

Historia
New Year’s Eve, 1962. As a snowstorm rages outside, Oxford high society gathers to ring in the new year at the city’s most exclusive party. This is a soiree no one will forget...not least because a guest is found dead in his car the next morning. It seems the young man tragically froze to death overnight after crashing into a snowdrift—but when WPC Trudy Loveday and coroner Clement Ryder are called in to investigate, they discover a tangled web of secrets that plainly point to murder.

Brought to you by the letters “ly”
Revisado: 01-22-23
Apologies in advance for this review, because once you start noticing Ms. Martin’s use of adverbs you won’t be able to stop. It must have boosted her word count by at least 20%.
…she asked, mildly.
…he responded, firmly.
…she said, flatly.
…she added, crisply.
I lost track of the narrative several times, distracted by the artless way these useless words were stapled to the end of every third sentence. The favorite by far was “mildly.” That’s such a (forgive me) mild descriptor, it adds nothing to the story but Ms. Martin was so enamored of it that she used it six times in recounting one short conversation between characters and at least two dozen times throughout the rest of the book.
Incessant use of adverbs, word repetition within sentences and character head-hopping are hallmarks of a very amateur writer, which Ms. Martin is not. These stylistic shortcuts are disappointing and for me, overshadowed a decent plot.

I hope this is a long long series
Revisado: 12-21-22
Police procedurals with lots of moving parts are my very favorite subgenre of mysteries. I also pine for the days when paranormal didn't automatically mean shape shifters and vampires. MJ White ticks so many of my boxes with the Cora Lael series. Cora's sensitivities scratch my paranormal itch without being too over the top. The slow buildup of personalities on Minshull's team and the friendship between he and Cora hit all the right notes for me as well. I actually enjoyed the team drama more than the core plot, which wasn't hard to figure out. But, I'm in this series for the long haul, I love how it's developing. Lucy Scott did a fabulous job with the performance (although Tris possibly changed nationality for one scene) .

Historia
Don’t miss the first novel in a gripping series featuring DI Clare Mackay, perfect for fans of Alex Gray, D. S. Butler and Rachel Amphlett. On the night of a wedding celebration, one guest meets a grisly end when he’s killed in a hit-and-run. A card bearing the number ‘five’ has been placed on the victim’s chest. DI Clare Mackay, who recently moved to join the St Andrews force, leads the investigation. The following night another victim is struck down and a number ‘four’ card is at the scene.

Surprisingly good narration by the author
Revisado: 08-17-20
I'm generally suspicious of authors reading their own work, with a scant few notable exceptions. I'm happy to say Marion Todd has joined the ranks of multi-talented authors who can double as their own voice talent. I quite enjoyed her narration. This has potential to be a promising police procedural series. Loads of conflict possibilities seeded for future novels but without a lot of obvious staging. My only complaint is that things wrapped up a little too neatly, but the build up to that point was grand. Looking forward to following Clare and her team on their next case.

Historia
As much as Beatrice Hyde-Clare relished the challenge of figuring out who murdered a fellow guest during a house party in the Lake District, she certainly does not consider herself an amateur investigator. So when a London dandy falls dead at her feet in the entryway of a London Daily Gazette, she feels no compulsion to investigate. It was a newspaper office, after all, and reporters are already on the case as are the authorities.

Wonderful narration
Revisado: 03-15-19
Jill Smith’s narration lifts this regency cozy from charming to absolutely delightful. Adorable characters, a slowly budding romance and a tinge of mystery make this an addictive series. I do hope there are plans to produce audible versions of the next two books.
