Not a typical Gladwell Book

While not a typical book by Malcolm Gladwell, I still recommend it. His earlier books were full of conversational observations one could easily discuss over a coffee with a stranger. This book is about how much we misunderstand when we do interact with strangers. It is tough topic, but highly relevant to events in America today (e.g, police shootings, angry interactions between strangers, campus sexual encounters, etc.)
A powerful addition to this audio version is the use of actual audio clips from the events discussed. Although the topic of the book has been described as "dark" when compared to his earlier work ...you will find that like his other books, it will have you replaying what was said long after you listen.

The daily news may not bring much joy, but this writer of obituaries found the good in her community and in life. This book was much more than humorous quips about eccentric folks in a small Alaskan town. It felt like she was sitting beside me talking about the lessons too often only learned at the end of life. A wonderful combination of insight and wit. You will laugh, shake your head and nod in reflection. You won't be sorry.

I have been a fan of Mary Pipher for years. Her insights have provided insights as a mother, a daughter of aging parents, and now of aging. I found the final chapters the most meaningful. It is where all the earlier stories came together. I was not disappointed as I finished the book.

I had heard a brief interview with Melinda Gates and it was enough for me to download the book. The surprise was that it was so much more ... so much better than I had anticipated. I have since purchased multiple hard copies and given them to friends. I have recommended the audio to others who claim they haven’t time to read. This is a message for everyone but particularly ever woman. We need to appreciate the power of lifting each other and then do it!

I picked this up after a recommendation. I was disappointed. I kept trying to find the thread ... loss? mourning? writing? bonding with a pet? friendship? suicide? I plowed on through the end against my better judgement. There were bright bits, but mostly the author heading in a dozen different directions. It took a lot just to finish.

A friend told me about this book. It was even better than their review. One warning ... you will have trouble pausing once you start. I love historical fiction and this was a great example of it.

Rich Sheridan looks at how work gets done in a way ... that's different. It's the way we all wish those we reported would see it. He admits this keeps changing. He has no silver bullets, just a lot of experience he is willing to share. The best part is that his insights work for those at any level of the organization ... anyone can elevate human energy and eliminate fear. Perhaps not for their entire organization, but at least their part of it.
Rich reads the book himself. For those of you in a hurry, you can turn up the speed to the 1.25 setting. Rich is from the mid-west where the cadence is not as frantic. I listened first and then brought the book and underlined all the parts that spoke to me.
This book, like his first, is worth your time. And we could all use more joy in our organizations.

Regardless of your political leanings, we live in difficult times. Meacham's book puts this all into perspective. We have been here before; we have survived. At times we have come out stronger; at times we are barely limped through. A great listen. I am looking forward to another listen of this audible in the coming weeks. I am certain it will resonate once again and I will enjoy it even more.

This is a great book for a road trip even it you aren't going to Canada. Mike talks about growing up, benefiting from a government that supported the arts, and all his many career stops along the way. It makes you laugh out loud and want to become a Canadian. There were three of us listening and we never tired of it.

I love Bob Newhart, but this trip down memory lane was disappointing. It jumped around and the audio quality ranged from great to awful. It was a great idea to hear today's comics like Will Ferrel and Jimmy Kimmel compare their starts with how Bob began, but then it would wander off into an unrelated topic before getting back on track. If you want some historical background on comedy this may work. If you are looking for a bit of comic relief, find another book.
