This is a charming story of a town in France and a woman who helps her neighbors during the siege by the Nazis and after when the Americans came in to rescue this town. I think there are other better stories about this time, such as the Nazi Officer's Wife, etc. This is a charming story and at times I thought it dragged.

I enjoyed this book especially as the characters kept getting into jams and getting out in interesting ways. There was never a dull moment, until the end and even that was fun. Jonah/Joshua is hard driven to get away from slavery and Angel is hard driven to keep up with Jonah. Interesting love story as well.

A wonderful story, autobiographical, about a young man, raised in a hill billy family, poor, with a drug addicted mother and a variety of men, one of whom was his father. What got him out of this abusive cycle and into college is the substance of the story. It supports a lot of what I have read about caring people in ones life who help you on your path. I thought the story was heartfelt, the narrator was excellent and the research excellent. I recommend this book highly.

I know truth is stranger than fiction, so if this is based on a true story, it becomes more believable. If it wasn't, then my feeling is it is trite and just plain awful. Adelaide is the typical Southern mean woman and Rachael is the typical poor slave who learns to read and figure and becomes very important in the scheme of running the cotton plantation. It also puts Jewish people in a very poor light, as interested in money above all else.

Would you try another book from Carl Hiaasen and/or John Rubinstein?

yes. this just did not do it for me.

What was most disappointing about Carl Hiaasen’s story?

Where a document was used as toilet paper. Just gross.

Who would you have cast as narrator instead of John Rubinstein?

John Rubinstein was fine as the narrator; a bit gravelly voiced but otherwise fine.

What character would you cut from Razor Girl?

thats hard; there were so many I would cut.

If you could sum up Last Train to Istanbul in three words, what would they be?

Brave courageous people in a chaotic world.

What did you like best about this story?

I didn't know anything about the train to Istanbul and its history so I found that fascinating that Turkey saved her Jews living in France.

What does Sanjiv Jhaveri bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

He has a nice method of speaking.

If you could rename Last Train to Istanbul, what would you call it?

First train to the rest of your life.

What disappointed you about Heroes of the Frontier?

The voice of the narrator was flat, the story was flat. I would like to return this.

What could Dave Eggers have done to make this a more enjoyable book for you?

I haven't a clue.

How could the performance have been better?

Maybe if the characters had come to life faster, the voice flatness would have been less annoying.

What character would you cut from Heroes of the Frontier?

Please do not ask me that question.

Would you consider the audio edition of Pastel Orphans to be better than the print version?

Since I did not read the book, I cannot comment on this.

What was one of the most memorable moments of Pastel Orphans?

There were a number of memorable moments in this audio, the the surprising ending with Greta reading her brother's letter as really very touching.

Have you listened to any of the narrators’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

No I have not listened to the narrator's other performances, but when I see them, I certainly will consider listening. I thought they all were very good.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

No, it was too long.

Any additional comments?

It is a worthwhile adventure albeit not really convincing.

What made the experience of listening to Lilac Girls the most enjoyable?

The narrator did an outstanding job and the story, based on real events, was very interesting, albeit sad.

Who was your favorite character and why?

Caroline Faraday because she was such a mover and shaker at a time when women weren't necessarily movers and/or shakers.

Which scene was your favorite?

There were several scenes that caught my attention. When Carolina takes Kasha to the hospital to repair her leg was one such.

If you could rename Lilac Girls, what would you call it?

Caroline Faraday and her Ravensbruck Rabbits.

Would you listen to Secrets of a Charmed Life again? Why?

I wouldn't listen to it again because I know the outcome. It is not a book where the writing is so beautiful and/or convoluted that a second listening would answer questions.

What did you like best about this story?

The story revolves around two sisters who are evacuated during the Blitz of the Second World War. The feelings of the eldest sister, who was 15 at the time rang true, as did the non-understanding of the 7 year old.

What does Alana Kerr Collins bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

Her voice and dialect were excellent and made the story come to life.

If you were to make a film of this book, what would the tag line be?

Two sisters who despite all odds survived the war.

Any additional comments?

Julia's writing of her journal dragged on and on. They could have left some of that out, I believe.
