Wow, captivating
Revisado: 08-24-22
I was apprehensive to invest this kind of time on a book this length because of the perspective of one source. I’m glad I decided to give it a try. I have read a number of books on this subject, this one is possibly the best yet. Once it got going, after some historical background, I couldn’t turn away. Her ability to tell her story of escape was terrifying and enlightening all in one. I was left thinking I can definitely understand how so many were taken in by such a Maniacal leader.

Historia
In the 1950s, a young Indianapolis minister named Jim Jones preached a curious blend of the gospel and Marxism. His congregation was racially mixed, and he was a leader in the early civil rights movement. Eventually, Jones moved his church, Peoples Temple, to northern California, where he got involved in electoral politics and became a prominent Bay Area leader. But underneath the surface lurked a terrible darkness.

The best on this topic
Revisado: 08-22-22
I’ve read a number of books on The peoples Temple and this is the best. It goes in to detail of JJ life before and during the time of TPT. I’ve found few inconsistencies in the facts presented and feel it’s well researched.

Is this a test
Revisado: 04-22-22
Did the author choose this specific narrator as a test.? I tried really hard to listen to the entire book because I really thought it would be helpful. And it probably is a helpful book. But this narrator is terrible the inflection of her voice, how she raises her voice at the end of most sentences. All of it simply added to my anxiety.

Historia
The very strange but nevertheless true story of the dark underbelly of a 1960s hippie utopia. Laurel Canyon in the 1960s and early 1970s was a magical place where a dizzying array of musical artists congregated to create much of the music that provided the soundtrack to those turbulent times. But there was a dark side to that scene as well. Many didn't make it out alive, and many of those deaths remain shrouded in mystery to this day.

Good for what it is.
Revisado: 04-20-22
After reading a number of negative reviews I decided to just go ahead and give it a try. I set my expectations rather low specifically on the authors style, and that was a good decision. Once I got past the fact it’s more of an encyclopedia and not a story that follows any pattern I enjoyed the content.
I will say I do question some of the liberties the authors takes with some of the “facts”, but historical accounts lend themselves to variations.
The narrator didn’t add to the experience, in fact I found it to be a big drawback to the entire book.
All on all there is a tremendous amount of information I probably wouldn’t have found in one spot anywhere. I’ve gotten worse on Audible….much worse.

Historia
Over two grim nights in Los Angeles, the young followers of Charles Manson murdered seven people, including the actress Sharon Tate, then eight months pregnant. With no mercy and seemingly no motive, the Manson Family followed their leader's every order. Twenty years ago, when journalist Tom O'Neill was reporting a magazine piece about the murders, he worried there was nothing new to say. Then he unearthed shocking evidence of a cover-up behind the "official" story, including police carelessness, legal misconduct, and potential surveillance by intelligence agents.

It’s about time someone told this story
Revisado: 04-05-22
Finally someone told this part of story and provide a detailed account of a lot of the unanswered questions. Much of the information he provided regarding the CIA and it’s involvement with the Counterculture movement and LSD mind control experiments isn’t well known. This is the first coherent publication I have come across which lays out the facts as they are. We will never get any more information than what is been provided by this account. It’s up to the individual to determine what forces were behind this. Excellent read. I still have lots of questions but at least now I can articulate them with facts known and understand what is not known.

What a gullible author
Revisado: 01-19-22
It’s quite obvious by reading this book the author was duped by psychopath. Her preconceive biases on the death penalty and her willingness to take on a crusade allowed her To be duped by a psychopath. I have read dozens of books on serial killers many with first hand accounts But none took on a sympathetic tone Towards a ruthless sadistic psycho pathic killer. Clearly he is not mentally ill as it pertains to the law. However there were some reasonable arguments that were made by the author, we’re his rights violated? Possibly. Was he mentally ill maybe but not according to the law he knew what he was doing and he knew it was wrong. This serial killer like many others seem to change their tune and have a come to Jesus moment in prison. In this way he is no different than most. However was he remorseful for real? That’s possible. Or Is it more likely he simply follow through with his narcissistic tendencies in order to control the situation.? A terrible book, with a terrible take, written rather poorly

Historia
In the Name of the Children gives an unflinching look at what it's like to fight a never-ending battle against an enemy far more insidious than terrorists: the predators, lurking amongst us, who seek to harm our children. During his 30-year career with the FBI, Jeff Rinek worked hundreds of investigations involving crimes against children: from stranger abduction to serial homicide to ritualized sexual abuse. Those who do this kind of work are required to plumb the depths of human depravity, to see things no one should ever have to see - and once seen can never forget.

Terrible book.
Revisado: 11-26-21
The author goes to great lengths to make the book about himself and his feelings of empathy and compassion. On and on he goes about himself and how much he had been impacted by what he had seen throughout his career. He goes into little details of getting crimes or the investigation tactics. The narrator had a difficult job with this book but he captured the arrogance the author put on paper. Good thing this book is included in my membership.

Historia
“Sam, could you do me a favor?” Thus begins a story that has now become part of America's true-crime hall of fame. It is a gory, grotesque tale befitting a Stephen King novel. It is also a David and Goliath saga - the story of a young lawyer fresh from the public defender's office whose first client in private practice turns out to be the worst serial killer in our nation's history. This is a gripping true crime narrative that reenacts the gruesome killings and the famous trial that shocked a nation.

Revisado: 09-24-21
I had put off reading any books about Gacy because there have been so many books and documentaries I have consumed over the years and thought what more is there to the story. Well, this book tells the story from a unique perspective. It’s well written, great narration and a very easy listen. If you are not uncomfortable with the humanization of someone who committed evil acts than you should enjoy this book.

Very well written
Revisado: 09-14-21
I’ve read so many books on serial killers, many of them our average at best. Paul Harrison takes an interesting approach as he informs the reader not only the criminal mind but his experiences in dealing with them. It’s easy to follow, easy to understand and does it go in depth on a number of the killers interviews. His way of explaining these people and their childhood experiences may have had the biggest impact on who they turned into. He in no way blames their actions on the abuses many have suffered as children and he presents the facts of such abuses as obviously factors.
The narration is well done.

Peter Vronsky is definitely one of the best. This book takes you through the modern age of serial killers with historical background like no other. Easy to listen to due in part of the fantastic narration and the author’s ability to weave a story with facts, data and images of American social influences on criminal behavior. He lays out a unique and intriguing possibilities as to why America saw such a steady and frightening rise in the number of serial killers from the 40’ through the 80’s
