Historia
November 1958: the National Horse Show at Madison Square Garden in New York City. Into the rarefied atmosphere of wealth and tradition comes the most unlikely of horses - a drab white former plow horse named Snowman - and his rider, Harry de Leyer. They were the longest of all longshots - and their win was the stuff of legend.

Could have been shorter
Revisado: 07-16-24
Snowman's story is a good one and I enjoyed this book, my criticism is that the writing was a little repetitive at times but overall that didn't stop me enjoying the story. I also found the information about horse numbers, and how horse ownership has changed, over the decades was interesting.

Struggled to finish
Revisado: 07-16-24
A book club read, and I found it a bit dull and struggled to finish. I think the main message was about taking time to appreciate the people in your life while you can, a worthy message. And I did find a book set in Korea had some interest, but otherwise the book was not for me.

Loved Tenzing
Revisado: 07-16-24
A strong start to the series, the crimes weren't too graphic, the mystery was intriguing and I enjoyed the time spent with Tenzing and the handsome Tank. I am moving on to the next one in the series.

Historia
Toru Okada's cat has disappeared, and this has unsettled his wife, who is herself growing more distant every day. Then there are the increasingly explicit telephone calls he has started receiving. As this compelling story unfolds, the tidy suburban realities of Okada's vague and blameless life, spent cooking, reading, listening to jazz and opera and drinking beer at the kitchen table, are turned inside out, and he embarks on a bizarre journey, guided (however obscurely) by a succession of characters, each with a tale to tell.

Feels like I spent time in an alternate reality
Revisado: 07-16-24
A Book Club read for me, which explains why I was reading it, and why I managed to finish it. I didn't hate it, but it's a very long book, with some gruesome descriptions included, and even after reading it, I am not really sure what it was all about. Not really my thing.

A feral history of home, and our relationship with that most unloved bird. As a boy, Jon Day was fascinated by pigeons, which he used to rescue from the streets of London. Twenty years later he moved away from the city centre to the suburbs to start a family. But in moving house, he began to lose a sense of what it means to feel at home.

Not just about pigeons
Revisado: 07-16-24
Interesting thoughts about life, parenthood and the meaning of home, amongst quite a bit of information about keeping, breeding and racing pigeons. I knew nothing about keeping pigeons before reading this book, but I am not surprised to learn that a reasonable amount of time and effort is required for racing pigeons with any hope of success.
This is a very readable book and I enjoyed learning more about these often unappreciated birds.

Historia
On his deathbed, the 400-year-old emperor of Atlantis has reason to worry. Signar, the savage ruler of a powerful outlying state, is scheming to seize control of the empire, and not even its advanced technology can save it. Signar will halt his invasion if he can take the emperor’s daughter, the beautiful Empress Salustra, as his bride. Such a marriage contradicts the deepest feelings of Salustra’s heart, the secret wisdom of her lineage, and her sacred trust as Atlantis’s queen. But the emperor has a plan: Salustra will seduce Signar and then sentence him to death.

For those interested in Atlantis
Revisado: 07-16-24
I first read this in my teens and enjoyed it more at that time. This time, I found it to have a rather slow start, and the endless political intrigue and manoeuvring rather bored me after a while, but it still manages to be quite an interesting story of Atlantis and it's demise.

A Little Gem
Revisado: 05-18-14
I remember reading this one for school a long time ago so thought I would revisit it with my 12 year old son and I can say we loved it. In fact, I would say it is one of the best books I have read, it is beautifully written and we found it quite gripping to listen to, but what I most enjoyed is the way it makes you think, both about the story of David's escape and travels, and the ideas in the book. I enjoyed it as a child, but I got so much more out of it as an adult.

A Childhood Favourite
Revisado: 04-16-14
I love the whole March story and we listened right through from Little Women, but I thought this reader missed the mark a little, she isn't good at different voices so it was difficult at times to know which character was speaking, and at times I felt she had the emphasis in the wrong place, and some words seemed to be pronounced a little oddly. This said, we did listen to the whole book and still enjoyed it.

I have been meaning to read Lost Horizon for years but never got around to it until I got the audio version and listened. The book was just as interesting and enjoyable as I had hoped and I think was very well read.
