I’m not crying, you’re crying
Revisado: 07-14-23
I was always a big fan of Ivan Maisel’s work at ESPN, be it spoken or written. I recall reading the story of him losing his son when news broke. As sad and heartbroken I felt for him and his family then, this book brings those feelings right back. It’s sad, but a great read for how to view loss and manage grief.

Historia
Statistics are everywhere, as integral to science as they are to business, and in the popular media hundreds of times a day. In this age of big data, a basic grasp of statistical literacy is more important than ever if we want to separate the fact from the fiction, the ostentatious embellishments from the raw evidence - and even more so if we hope to participate in the future, rather than being simple bystanders.

Great book for statistics lovers
Revisado: 03-22-23
picked up this book for its ties to my profession but also as someone who enjoys math and stats. Overall a great listen. There were parts later in the book where the content made my earballs glaze over a bit as it sounded like I was listening to the architect give Neo the “your life is the sum of a remainder of an unbalanced equation inherent to the programming of the matrix” speech. I had to re-listen to certain sections, and will undoubtedly come back to this book in the future. If nothing else, ch14 provides a great 10 rule list to live by.

Enjoyable listen

Dalio has laid out a framework for assessing the economic and power landscapes of the world; and he takes the time to break it down and share his learnings in this book. He shares the data analysis he’s done, informing you of the fact he uses historical benchmarks to establish probabilistic future outcomes. He also takes care to note that even with all his data models, the probabilities he is betting on are uncertain, and the known about the future is well outweighed by the unknowns, so as to not upset Taleb or the Taleb faithful. 😉
