Historia
While most of us are familiar with the Underground Railroad, there was much more to the movement than helping individuals escape their bondage. In the eight lectures of The Abolitionists, Professor Kellie Carter Jackson of Wellesley College will bring you along as she traces the history of the fight to end slavery in America, from its relatively quiet origins to the turning point at Harper’s Ferry to the Civil War.

Historia
It was supposed to be the highlight of her career, the pinnacle for which she’d worked all her life. And as Hattie McDaniel took the stage in 1940 to claim an honor that would make her the first African-American woman to win an Academy Award, she tearfully took her place in history. Between personal triumphs and tragedies, heartbreaking losses, and severe setbacks, this historic night of winning best supporting actress for her role as the sassy Mammy in the controversial movie Gone With the Wind was going to be life-changing. Or so she thought.

I feel like I know Hattie McDaniel personally
Revisado: 04-14-24
I never really thought about all that Hattie McDaniel went through in her life and career, but this book opened me up to do my own research on her. The narrator’s voice matches the “look” of Ms. McDaniel. I feel like I know her personally. Thank you for this story, I want more just like this!!

Historia
The New York Times Magazine’s award-winning “1619 Project” issue reframed our understanding of American history by placing slavery and its continuing legacy at the center of our national narrative. This new book substantially expands on that work, weaving together 18 essays that explore the legacy of slavery in present-day America with 36 poems and works of fiction that illuminate key moments of oppression, struggle, and resistance.

Aware-ly-Astounded!!!
Revisado: 01-17-22
To simply say that this book was a “good read” or “informational” will dare not give this beautifully crafted book of historic truths and enlightenment any real descriptive justice. Listening to each chapter has brought words to life. Heartbreaking facts, and still able to bring forth profound pride was magical. Thank you to EVERY contributor to make this masterpiece!!! This book will invoke many emotions, but if you’re looking for ways to re-educate or re-understand American history, this is the book for you. White, black and all other cultures are welcomed!!! It’s isn important journey at rediscovering oneself. I became aware. I was astounded. And you will too (if you dare).
