Historia
“It's not a diet, it's a lifestyle.” You've probably heard this phrase from any number of people in the wellness space. But as Christy Harrison reveals in her latest book, wellness culture promotes a standard of health that is often both unattainable and deeply harmful. The Wellness Trap delves into the persistent, systemic problems with that industry, offering insight into its troubling pattern of cultural appropriation and its destructive views on mental health, and shedding light on how a growing distrust of conventional medicine has led ordinary people to turn their backs on science.

Nuanced, balanced exploration
Revisado: 05-10-23
I was stunned at Harrison's ability to unpack so many layers of the history of, motivation for, and dangers of wellness culture, and how intertwined it is with so much else in American culture, especially the limits and failings of (despite so often the best of intentions) our current medical system. I am not surprised to read negative reactions in other reviews, as that is a perfectly reasonable knee jerk response if you are encountering this content for the first time. I sincerely hope that folks on both the medical side and the wellness side are able to come into this book with an open mind and curiosity, and start to engage in deeper conversations about how we can all move towards more true well being.

Historia
It was a lifetime ago that recently widowed Maggie Flynn was in Wyndham Beach. Now, on the occasion of her fortieth high school reunion, she returns to her hometown on the Massachusetts coast, picking up right where she left off with dear friends Lydia and Emma. But seeing Brett Crawford again stirs other emotions. He shared Maggie’s dreams - and eventually, a shattering secret that drove them apart. Buying her old family home and resettling in Wyndham Beach means a chance to start over for Maggie and her two daughters, but it also means facing her rekindled feelings....

Anti-feminist drivel
Revisado: 05-05-21
I am so confused at the overwhelming positive reviews of this book, and so frustrated at the genre name "Women's Fiction". If you can get past the narrator's terrible Massachusetts accents and the extremely bland, predictable plot, I hope you get stuck on the gross caricatures of middle-aged women. The fixation on appearance (labeled "taking care of yourself") came to a distressing head for me when the character who has steadfastly refused make-up because she's happy with her looks "realizes" she should wear make-up and change her clothes to "make herself feel good" - totally coincidentally when she's trying to attract the attention of the 2-dimensional men who are completely in thrall to the woman with the lowcut dress. Fiction should lift us up while it entertains. This kind of nonsense drags us all down.

Excellent, important book. Really wish the chapter on religion could have been skipped over, but otherwise I think a must read for everyone who lives in a body, or loves someone who does!

Entertaining, but somewhat poor narration
Revisado: 01-27-15
Overall a solid, entertaining Sanderson book. Not one of his best, but if you enjoy his style of world-building, you'll enjoy this. The only thing that really took away from it was the narration. It wasn't exactly flat, but rather each sentence had the exact same affect, and several of the characters were voiced in an extremely annoying way that made no sense for their characters.

Language defines us as a species, placing humans head and shoulders above even the most proficient animal communicators. But it also beguiles us with its endless mysteries, allowing us to ponder why different languages emerged, why there isn't simply a single language, how languages change over time and whether that's good or bad, and how languages die out and become extinct.

What did you like about the performance? What did you dislike?
McWhorter gets tedious in his defense of his anti establishment views, but is overall very knowledgeable and presents the material in an engaging and absorbable progression.

Fun to have a zombie apocalypse from the perspective of the zombie. Nothing special, but entertaining.

horrible pro-rape story
Revisado: 05-21-14
Would you ever listen to anything by Delle Jacobs again?
No. This story of "just push the woman until she admits she likes it" is horrible and dangerous. Couldn't finish it. She should be ashamed.
