Historia
Martha Macnamara knows that her daughter, Elizabeth, is in trouble; she just doesn't know what kind. Mysterious phone calls from San Francisco at odd hours of the night are the only contact she has had with Elizabeth for years. Now, Elizabeth has sent her a plane ticket and reserved a room for her at San Francisco's most luxurious hotel. Yet she has not tried to contact Martha since she arrived, leaving her lonely, confused, and a little bit worried. Into the story steps Mayland Long, a distinguished-looking and wealthy Chinese man who lives at the hotel and is drawn to Martha's good nature and ability to pinpoint the truth of a matter.

Also, they shoot a cat. The attempt at charm is via horrible stereotypes. My jaw hurts from grinding my teeth so much.

What a shame
Revisado: 10-21-23
The narrator was replaced for this last installment of what was a very enjoyable series. She performs the male roles, all of them, in the same voice, with no inflection, in stentorian tones that sound like a Dalek had a baby with a Nazi officer from an old timey movie. If the book were about Daleks or WW2 that would be great, but it kind of ruins the fantasy of alluring, charming, gorgeous fae.

The great city of Ebora once glittered with gold. Now its streets are stalked by wolves. Historia
Finnmark, Norway, 1617. Twenty-year-old Maren Magnusdatter stands on the craggy coast, watching the sea break into a sudden and reckless storm. Forty fishermen, including her brother and father, are drowned and left broken on the rocks below. With the menfolk wiped out, the women of the tiny Arctic town of Vardø must fend for themselves. Three years later, a stranger arrives on their shore. Absalom Cornet comes from Scotland, where he burned witches in the northern isles. He brings with him his young Norwegian wife, Ursa.

Horrific, based on true history, the telling is as bleak as the landscape, and as gripping as a witch hunt. Take a deep breath, but don't pass this one by.

Shoulda ended before the last chapter
Revisado: 01-22-22
3.5. The story was very original and well told up until the very last chapter. At that point it was like spoon-feeding a message, which I think that any semi-intelligent reader could have understood by themselves. And had the author ended the story at the next-to-last chapter it would have left us thinking: probably thinking that we know what happened but at the same time leaving some room for human variance, which is what the whole point was to begin with. And so, the last chapter with its hitting you over the head with a bat type of messaging ruined what was until that point a pretty solid story.

Revisado: 01-21-22
I honestly can't tell if there was a point to all of this, but it seems that the goal was to get into Nadine's story, which is no interesting, and then she basically starts over and tells it again. Whyyyyyyy.

She is fine. Took me a while to get used to how chirpy she is, given the subject matter of rape, torture and murder... But she is smart and lively and interesting.
He is a disaster. Can't seem to follow even really simple sentences, and his most coherent contributions are ugh, huh, oh, uh huh, and oh my god.

In a rare and gorgeous departure, beloved novelist Alice Hoffman weaves a web of tales, all set in Blackbird House. These interconnected narratives are as intelligent as they are haunting, as luminous as they are unusual. Inside Blackbird House more than a dozen men and women learn how love transforms us and how it is the one lasting element in our lives.

Lovely
Revisado: 07-04-21
Well written, evocative short stories surrounding a single house from the American War of Independence until the present.
Not much "happens" in the stories, they are mostly about love -- not necessarily romantic, all kinds -- in different contexts and situations.
Beautifully done.

Flat characters doing boring things in a predictable story. There wasn't even one redeeming quality. Oh, except that it was short. So I can quickly move onto something better.
